I didn't think I'd actually need it too much but recently my husband's computer just completely blacked out and stopped working out of nowhere and he was freaking out trying to figure out what was wrong with it. And I suggested he put it on the cooling mat cuz he was working outside so I thought maybe it had gotten too hot. So he brought it inside and used the cooling mat and he said within a few minutes his laptop had cooled down to the point it was working again and he was very relieved to not have to go out and replace something so expensive.

The bad thing about this is laptops can easily overheat, and that can pose many problems. You can damage your laptop, your furniture or even your skin. This chill mat makes it possible for your laptop to remain running without worrying about it overheating. It’s sleek design isn’t bulky, and it doesn’t take up much more space than the laptop itself. It’s effective & made well! If you don’t own one already, then this is the one to get! We received this product for free in exchange for my unbiased opinion and review.

I already knew from reading technical information and a lot of blogs that laptops need to be cooled. This was the first laptop that I had ever owned. The cooling pad does exactly what it says it will do, which is cool down the laptop, sit it at a great egonomic angle for your hands durng typing and it is very comfortable on your lap. I use it on a laptop stand, that I also purchased at the time I purchased the laptop, most of the time. Although my laptop does get very warm after 8 hours of use or more, I've tried it with and without the cooling pad, and the laptop is a lot cooler with the cooling pad after 8 hours then without it. In fact, I would be afraid not to use it again after 8 hours of use.

I have been using mine for over 3 years now and the fans still work and are as quiet as they were when new. At first I was worried that the plastic might break or crack, but it is very durable. The fans are in a great place for my Dell Studio 15, and the laptop's own fan barely ever has to run, and the heat from everything else inside barely heats up the keyboard; like it does if I'm not using the Targus Chill Mat. I would highly recommend this laptop cooler, and if I needed to buy another one, I would buy this same unit again.

The only cons is that it's a bit heavy but I was not wondering having a light one because of the fans. For the price, it's the best thing you can have!

It works even better than I had hoped it might, keeping my laptop and my lap completely cool. I'm also amazed at how quiet it is. I can barely hear it running even when holding it up near my head. It does have a very slight vibration to it, but it doesn't transfer to the laptop and is the only flaw I can find to point out. I highly recommend this product.

I purchased this cooling stand with dual fans to keep my HP 17inch Pavillion Notebook cooler when streaming a long video session; while I do like that the fans are quiet, the low volume of the fans is offset by the lack of cooling airflow put out by them. The largest drawback to this product is that my extended battery does not allow for a proper fit on the stand and when placed evenly on the base, the battery covers up most of the cooling fan surface...I do not suggest that this product be purchased by extended battery owners.

My other chill mat came with extra usb ports which was awesome and dual fan speed. This one is just plugged in. Not recommended for gaming. For myself its not what I wanted, I use it with my old laptop now and my other chill mat on my new laptop because it works better when I'm gaming.

Only thing I didn't care for was ....it didn't fit in my computer case, well it fit, but I couldn't zip that portion of my case closed ..... so it would kind of hang out. I used it with my 17.3" lappy ...needless to say, I loved my cooling mat, I would just take the case with the mat protruding from the case ... I didn't too much care. I had another expensive brand computer .... burned up due to overheating... so I recommend the investment. Not mention recommend HP laptops : )

I found my laptop that I was using while laying in bed was getting quite hot so I needed something that helped cool it down. This product from Targus does just that. It's quiet too which helps. The only thing I don't care for is that it now gives my laptop a slight tilt which isn't the optimum thing for me seeing as I am using in while laying in bed, but I can live with that. The one thing to keep in mind is that when you close your laptop it does not shut off the fans. It is USB powered so you have to pull the connection to turn it off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product but not for HP I like the mat as a stand for my new HP laptop. It does help keep the laptop cooler and the angle is good, making typing much easier. I cannot, however plug in the fan because of HP's desogn of placing the USB ports in front. To plug in the the stand, the cable is in the way of my mouse on the right side and conflicts with my modem cable on the left side. So, as a stand it is great but as a fan it is just not usable for me.

I plugged this in and had to feel the fans to make sure they were working, they are that quiet. Which I'm so happy for because my friend got one of these and it sounded like a chopper was trying to take off. And it is keeping my laptop completely cooled. Such a great buy!!

It's a simple item that should be a must have with all laptops because it does the required job of cooling your laptop very well...especially during hot, humid summer days. There are no instructions on how to use it...which is the top or bottom, but there are instructional videos on You Tube that explain everything perfectly. I was amazed at how cool my laptop stays with this product and there is no noticable noise caused by the cooling fans.

I couldn't be happier with this purchase! Just pop the cord into the USB, and there's no way your laptop will overheat.(or even warm up for that matter.) Love this product!!

Does a nice job of removing heat from your laptop. Has two quite fans that pull the heat out to the sides and away from the computer. Nice materials used makes it look and feel like a much more expensive chill mat. I have bought three over the last few years, my first one I pulled the USB cord right out of the mat when I got it caught on my bed post. My new one I have shortened the USB cord by wrapping up the cord with a plastic tie so it wont hang down when going from one room to the other. My second one is going strong after 6 months with no problems. I also bought one for a BDay present and that person loves it so much that she has bought her employees each one (5!

I still have the unit but must periodically tilt up the laptop to hit the cooler in an effort to stop the noise/vibration. This works sometimes or I must unplug and replug in. Cleaning out dust didn't help. I figure a flaw in design or I got a lemon.

Base is lined with quality fabric instead of plastic allowing more comfort on the lap. Another bonus is the adjustable rubber grips which can be moved around if you're using a smaller laptop or an over-sized battery. Although they advertise that it supports 17 inch laptops, it's about 3/4 inch short on the left and right sides. Another con would be the fact that this product is rather hard to clean in the event that there's a buildup of dust.

I like that the mat is USB powered, so there's no bulky power adapter to lug around. The built in fan is quiet but efficient. The bottom of the mat is comfortable on my lap, and the mat is pretty lightweight, so it's not super heavy on my legs (no one likes to lose circulation in appendages during an intense MMO raid). Only complaint is that it's a little big, so not great on portability, though that seems pretty expected for a mat designed for 17 inch laptops.

Being a remote student you can imagine how long I am using/ on my computer each day, and when I got this pad it made using my computer so much more bearable. This pad not only gets the computers at a more comfortable position/height for me when sitting down, but it also helped stop the burning sensation when my computer would inevitably over-heat. Overall good product, wouldn’t say it’s necessary but if you can get your hands on it, it’s super useful.

I had high hopes for this product after seeing positive reviews; now I wish I could give it a half star, it is that bad. The ergonomic design is good -- it makes a comfortable lap desk for the computer. That said, the little rubber feet that are intended to help keep your notebook from slipping come out easily and mine got lost within the first couple of weeks. I find myself having to balance a regular desk fan under the laptop at times just to cool the surface down so my fingers don't burn on the track pad. I'm now back to reading reviews for chill pads and hoping I can find one that actually works... Don't waste your money on this one.

Cons: No separate power switch (so make sure your usb port is not always supplying power to the unit which may result in the unit failing over time, some notebooks (smaller and larger screen sizes) do not always sit well notebook tends to slightly bounce when typing (due also to the fact that the unit has a triangle shape with nothing in betweene the top and the bottom half). Conclusion: Good buy when on sale.

It is also very light, quiet and really helps cool down my laptop. Without it, my laptop keyboard is usually pretty hot but with this, it really makes a huge difference! It's also good looking, comfortable and holds my laptop in place with the rubber things on it, never slips even though it's tilted.

I can now run my pc for hours and it doesn't heat up. I strongly recommend anyone with a laptop to purchase a cooling mat and this is one of the best. Thanks HP customer service for recommending this. The shipping was fast and I know I am going to extend the life of my computer. Well worth the price.

Granted, it's just a piece of plastic covered with neoprene but it feels just...cheap. The only real problem I foresee is the USB cable. The wire guage is too small and it runs out of the back of the unit. IMO its a bad design and cannot withstand much if any abuse before it no longer functions. A better design would have been simply not to run it out of the back at all. Not sure I would buy this again. Maybe for $20 but not $34+.

I hoped it was a fluke, and bought a second chill mat ... and THREE WEEKS later, one of the fans on the second purchase stopped working. I won't be fooled again. I had my HP Chrome motherboard replaced recently and a possible cause of damage was heat. The underside of my Chrome got pretty hot after a while. I will let you know in a few years if the chill mat is effective.

I like that the plug in can be moved to either side of the mat so that it can be plugged into either side of the laptop. The only problem that I had was that it did not fit into my laptop bag and it is hard to use on a solid surface like a table because it slips and slides all over the place. Could benefit from some type of rubber feet or something.

Previous to using it my 2yr old portable would freeze and reboot when it got too hot unless I can a fan on it. But now, it works great, and the unit is really quiet!

The only thing is that I do move the cord with the laptop. I'm not sure how it would affect the battery. It is comfortable using it on my lap. It makes a small noise, but it's not a problem for me. It's easy to disconnect if it bothers you. Just using the stand helps even when unplugged. It is a nice slanted angle on the desk too. I highly recommend this stand.

The cord, which comes out of the back, can reach anywhere on the computer for a USB. You can even shift the cord under the mat and it will reach the front if you need to. The mat seems a little flimsy at first, if you push on the top, it will flex downward, but it holds the computer nicely. The fabric on the bottom of the mat is nice and comfortable on your legs too (I mostly sit with the computer on my lap). All in all, I am really enjoying this product and I think it will give me a longer life expectancy for my laptop.

My 17.3" laptop fits nicely on it and the double fans are an added plus to keep the laptop cool. The amazing thing to me is how quite these fans are. I wasn't even sure they were working! I have wondered why the fans weren't placed closer to the front of the mat. The left side of my laptop does get warmer than the right. I'm very pleased with the product and glad I made the decision to get the Chill Mat at the same time I made my laptop purchase.

Unfortunately, both have failed in the exact same way in exactly the same spot. The top and bottom plastic surfaces developed a stress crack at the edges around the midway point. I would like to suggest a design improvement: Put a post between the top and bottom plates on each side to add additional support. That will prevent the plastic from flexing when the chill mat is picked up to carry it with the laptop on it. This small improvement will go a long way in making the product last longer. This will also take Chill Mat from 2 stars to 5 (or 10 if that was an option),

My PC's fans are plenty powerful, and if manually turned up to maximum effort sound like a f18 powering up to take off the carrier deck. So needless to say, my computer stays plenty cool even under heavy gaming. The max I've seen is 85 degrees out of my GPU. But I along with my wife was concerned with the heat's effect on my little swimmers.. A laptop running at 85 degrees Celsius isn't necessarily comfortable sitting on your lap, and definitely not good for the crown jewels. With this chill mat, it's a win-win situation for me. I keep my laptop a few degrees cooler and get to keep my fertility. The added bonus of the comfortable angle is nice too.

I also used "canned pressurized air" to clean out the various vents in my computer. Not sure which of these two things did the most good. I kind of think it is a combination of both. I also like the slight angle that the cooling pad puts my laptop on making the keyboard easier to type on.

The only advantage this cooler had over other models in the department store the day I purchased it 4 months ago was size. It was the only of the 5 available large enough to accommodate a 17" laptop. Though there are only two fans, they seem to keep up with the task of cooling. Due to a somewhat lack of rigidity in the design, the fans are often loud or rub on the insides of their housings. This can sometimes be corrected by lifting my laptop and giving a 'swift' smack to the topside of the fan housing. Makes me feel better, and it seems to work at settling the fans down as well. Other times, the fans are hardly noticeable. Given that this unit uses a valuable USB port, it would be nice if it returned the favor and supplied one in return . . . as large as it is, supplying 5 shouldn't be an issue. All in all . . . it has been getting the job done and has lasted over four months to date. Money well spent to save from another hardrive 'meltdown'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I liked this product so much I purchased 2 I chose this chill mat for my son because I was looking for something to accomodate his 17" Inspiron laptop. Based on the reviews, product description and reasonable price... I purchased this model. He loves it. Then I was jealous and wanted a chill mat for my 14" Inspiron and decided to use his for a few days to see if it would accomodate the smaller laptop. I loved it and after reluctantly giving my son's back to him, I immediately purchased my own. The advantages are that its USB cord plugs directly into your laptop which powers it without the need for a wall outlet. This makes it as portable as your laptop. The cord was a little longer than I needed it to be so I left it in the original cord wrapping and pulled out the USB to plug in. If I ever need to change this to something else a small black twist would work and still look nice. The fans are super quiet to the point that you can barely hear them and wonder if they are even working at all, but they ARE and doing a great job as well. Now that I have this laptop chill mat those heat lag days are all in the past! I am an online student and use my computer constantly. I normally run numerous programs at once and stream videos and music. I don't run gaming programs on my laptop but sometimes my kids get on heavily loaded servers to play stuff like Club penguin and the computer never gets hot or bogs down at all with the chill mat. This chill mat has an open center which makes it extremely easy to pick up with your laptop almost like it was part of it. The grips hold the laptop in place really well on top and it never slides even with quite a bit of tilting and movement while it is sitting on my lap. It sits at an incline which makes it even more comfortable to work with your laptop. Since my laptop was 14" I had to keep my knees together while it was on my lap to keep it sitting at a working capacity. The 17" chill mat allows me a little more freedom to move around because it is wider across my legs and grips the laptop fairly well. The comfort level of this product is amazing. The bottom has a soft material with a gel like interior which ups the comfort level to plus 10. Since it doesn't have a slick bottom it stays on your lap even with adjusting your legs around quite a bit. I always like to state any cons I have about the product but I honestly just don't have any with this one. I don't mind that it only comes in black and although it seems a bit pricey at about 35 bucks it was a purchase I would certainly repeat. This is one of those items that is nice enough to give to a good friend who has a laptop and they will adore you for it. It has been my favorite accessory to my laptop next to my Logitech nano chip mouse. I don't have any idea of the length of time that this product will endure since I just purchased mine and my son has only had his for a few months but I don't foresee this product going to the trash bin any time soon.

It's the second mat of this type that I've gotten, and I've had better luck with the longevity than with any other brand of chill mat. It's open design keeps the fans from overheating and burning out, which is a BIG plus as I've used other brands of chill mats that didn't have the same design, and the fans burned out within a couple months. I would highly recommend this particular brand of chill mat over any others that I've tried.

I currently have a cooling mat on the HP but it still over heats (this was the one recommended and sold by HP)! I switched the HP mat for the Chill Mat and amazingly the Chill Mat solved the problem. It is quiet and comfortable on my lap. The only problem is I need to order another one for my Dell so my son can use his laptop on the bed and in the car. You can buy this item in retail outlets at a slightly higher price but it's not backed by Dell's excellent customer service. Oh, the shipping was super fast. Buy this with confidence.

While the fans were quiet, they were also very weak and do not circulate the air very efficiently. I am not expecting gusts of wind mind you, but a steady flow of air to cool the laptop. It is perfect sized for a 15" laptop. A 17" might hang over a little bit, but not too noticeable. Quality is an issue, since the fans stopped working in less than a year, and the rubber feet to keep your laptop from sliding off did not stay in place after 6 months or so. Eventually, the laptop keeps sliding off of the rubber feet and I find myself pushing the laptop back into place more often than not. The feet have little pegs on their bottom side that plug into the top of the unit, and after awhile they get weak and start popping out. It is powered by plugging into a USB port on your laptop, so make sure you have a port to spare. It doesn't drain a lot of power from your laptops battery, but it is noticeable. It angles downwards toward the user which makes it a little awkward if you are used to typing on a level surface, but seems to be convenient once you get used to it. I use my laptop for web browsing, occasional shows/movies online, light gaming. While it did help cool the base of my laptop to some degree, the air flow (with 2 fans even) just was not strong enough to cool to an acceptable level to maintain laptop performance. I really feel the fan speed is just too slow to make a justifiable difference for what you pay.

However, I think this laptop mat needs an upgrade in its features. As HP is reducing the number of USB-A ports and moving towards USB-C, this chiller mat should actually be able to have a USB-C connection, and in an ideal world, also be able to work as a hub, providing the user with even more USB ports so they don't feel like they lost a precious port with this mat.

Instead of drawing air away from the intake. It makes no sense to me to have the CPU fan drawing air through the intake while the "Chill Mat" is pulling air away from the intake. The fans were effectively fighting each other. I'm about to remove the original fans, integrate a USB hub and install higher flowing/quieter fans. One of my laptops has (2) USB ports. Which makes things a little inconvenient at times.

Finally it takes up one of your USB ports on your laptop without giving any back. Most others have one or two USB ports built into the mat.

When not in use, the usb cord is tucked into a special spot in the unit it's not just laying out there. It looks as if you can plug the usb into either the left side of your computer, or the right. The bottom of this chill mat is neoprene so I havent had any issues with it sliding away from me on the desk, so that is also a perk compared to chill mats I have had in the past. It is not very quiet, but it's not what I would call noisy either. It sounds just barely louder than the typing of the keys. It has been doing it's job. One thing that I was really surprised about was the fact that even though my laptop was closed and asleep (not shut down), and thankfully plugged in, the chill mat was still going. When I opened my laptop to start up, it turned off for a split second, then ran again. So this might be something that you keep a look out for if your computer is running but not plugged in.

He used to use a throw pillow to keep his laptop off his lap and to prevent the blocking of the internal fan vent. This chill mat is great! He now has a flat surface to place his computer that is also keeping the laptop cool. And I am now less annoyed that he’s using a throw pillow for an unintended use. The only drawback is that it will be hard to pack for travel as it’s bigger than the laptop itself.

It keeps the laptop cool, it's comfortable on your lap, and the fans are very quiet. However, the bearings on the fans have started to rattle and this is a surprise considering it's been only a month of use and was expecting that it should last at least a year. Over a few minutes, the bearing noise does fade away, but I fear one day it'll persist. Other reviewers here have had praise for this product; perhaps I've got a lemon. If you can get this on sale i.e. Dell days, it may still be worth the investment for your laptop.

She sits in her chair and is on the laptop quite a bit. She appreciates the chill mat very much. She told me she would get bruises on her legs from her laptop sitting on just her legs and sometimes would get quite warm. She now always uses her chill mat with her new purchase of a dell laptop and think I may be ordering a new laptop for my 90 years young Dad soon. I would recommend Dell to everyone

I had just spent days checking and reviewing the new laptop I needed and I got lazy; I thought if HP is suggesting it, it should be good. It is ok. The one HP suggested does not really fit the HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 Quad Edition laptop. The feet don’t lineup with the stops. I was able to add sticky back bumpers to the bottom of the laptop to stop it sliding off the stand. The power connecter sticks out a bit far for my liking. Fan is very quiet and seems to work well. I’ve only had it for a couple of week… we’ll see how long it lasts.

That said I'd prefer it was 110v wired and not USB, only because so many laptops now only have 2 usb's. A port replicator or hub is great but with no on/off switch this unit will just keep running unless unplugged. Its a good product, and works well, especially if you like to have your laptop on your lap in bed, by the tv, etc. I'm a sit at the desk guy so thats where I differ.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chill Mat cools my laptop, but fans are loud The Chill Mat works, but the fans are loud. On the bright side, they are of a lower pitch than the fan in my Dell Precision 3551, so the net effect is a marginally less acoustically annoying, and certainly cooler, laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed I am so glad I decided to puchase my chill mat! I love that it's vented on the sides. The fans are very quiet I keep checking to see if they are on. The only think I would add is either a port on the chill mat to replace the one the it is using or the option to plug it into an outlet. Otherwise I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and effective Does what is promises: draws power from a USB port to power silent fans that cool your laptop and avoid heat buildup in your lap. One drawback affects mouse users, but not touch-pad-only users: the surface area is too small to accommodate a mouse. I solved the problem by inserting a rigid board between the two decks; it slides out to give me a mouse pad when I need it.

I'm so grateful for this product. Because now i can be on my laptop for hours at a time instead of just an hour at a time.. Love it! it's well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only thing getting hot.... is my trigger finger! This mat was an afterthought b/c I like to sit with the puter in my lap and play. My old one kept overheating and I started having problems with it shutting itself off at critical moments of my play. Very frustrating! I have been using this cooling mat and am amazed at how cool the puter stays while playing the most heated games! Good Product, Good Price, well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Design is comfortable but the cord is extremely short, fans aren't powerful I like the design but the cord on the newer model is ridiculously short. I had to get a usb extension cord to be able to plug it into my docking station. The fans are quiet - as they should be - but breeze is barely detectable.

Tried to get it warrantied but, they require you to pay shipping UPS or FedEx to get it back to them and then they send you a new one. $25 shipping for a warranty on a product you can buy all over for $35. Horrible warranty and reliability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from USB Cable Shorted Out I received the Chill Mat as a gift; to go with my Dell Inspiron 1525, and it worked great until the USB cable which connects it to the laptop shorted out. This was not the only issue I discovered that the fans cannot be cleaned as they are encased and inaccessible. A redesign where the cable is less likely to be stressed to the point of breaking and the fans can be cleaned would greatly improve this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Broken easily The overall design is very comfortable; however, you can't clean out the fan. It is completely sealed off. Had it for about 4 months and it now has a short in the wire that powers it from the laptop. Have to push the wire in to get it to work and then if I move or put the laptop down to go do something else, it ususally stops working at all. Entirely would not recommend this because of the short in the wire. If I could get my money back, I would.

I have noticed the bottom of my laptop does not get nearly as warm as it used to and the laptops fans come on much less oftne than they did before. Cons: My laptop has a 17.3" screen and it hangs over the edges of the mat about half an inch on either side.

Since adding the external cooling system, I've experienced ZERO perforormance issues! A simple solution to a debilitating and frustrating problem!

Laptop slips off surface too often. Raised tabs need to be bigger to keep laptop securely on pad. Other than that, meets my needs and expectations.

Setup is as easy as 1 2 3, just put your laptop on the chill mat with the incline up and plug in the USB into your laptop and your done. It's dual fans keep your chipsets from being damaged and maintaining a the speed of your processor. It is very comfortable on your lap or great on my desk. I would definitely recommend it.

It get so hot underneath when on my lap and I hate putting it on pillows at home because it makes it even hotter. I was so glad when I got this. No no over heating problems and is a great lap desk. I only wish it was a bit taller. I have another lap desk that is about 5 inches tall but no fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Comfortable I’m at very happy with this dual fan chill mat. The size is perfect for me and it is very comfortable to have on my lap for extended periods of time. The fabric top keeps my computer from sliding all around, the fans keep my computer cool but they don’t suck the life out of my battery. That’s a huge bonus. The fans are quiet and almost barely noticeable. This unit is very durable as well. I’ve dropped it a few times (oops and it barely has a scratch on it. I’d highly recommend this product.

There was a big hole and rip in the box and a plastic piece was snapped off the upper right hand side of the chill pad. The mat must be somewhat tough because looking at the box it should have had much more damage on it. It was surprising how little packing was in the box. Otherwise, I believe it is a good strong chill mat.

The air holes allow the fan out put to reach the entire bottom of the lap top keeping it running cool and quick. The ergonomic design allows for comfortable use of the laptop throughout the day. Easily plugged in with the attached USB that when not in use tucks easily into dedicated clip just inside. There are also 4 raised rubber "feet" that help keep your laptop on place. 10/10

It has a memory foam like cushion for comfort that is very nice for sitting on you polar for long periods of time while working from home. My computer no longer gets extremely hot! I love this mat and it serves its purpose! Highly recommend.
