Poor manufacturing quality.
I've been an HP Calculator fan for 40 yrs, since my first Made-in-the-USA HP-41C in the early 1980's - which still works! Unfortunately, the quality of my recent Made-in-China HP-12C is awful. Barely used, the keys are already malfunctioning, machine turns off in the middle of calculations,... the machine is completely useless. It's not straight, rocks on a flat surface. Save your money. Don't buy these machines. Make HP accountable for their quality! Make it here or close your business!

Display unreadable after one year.
Used an HP12C for 30 years. One I bought in college gave out last year after years of hard use. Purchased new one last year. Lasted one year and is now useless.
Issue is that display characters are unreadable. If HP sends me a note saying they have improved quality I would buy again, but until that time I cannot recommend this calculator.
Note I would gladly pay double what the current price is for this device if quality was adequate.
Now all I have to do is find another RPN calculator!

Extrememely bad quality. Only worked for two days
I got a HP12c as a present. The first day worked OK, but the second day the upper part of all digits disappeared. I am really surprised for this, as the previous HP calcultators I have, worked perfect for years and this one only lasts for two days. I have followed the HP procedure to reset the calculator but it does not solve the malfunction of the display. I always thought this could not happen to a HP calculator.

HP 12C
I have used the HP 12C since the mid 1980s and prefer the 12c over other calculators. My first 12c worked for more than 20 years before being damaged and replaced. The 12c Platinum does not come close to the original as since 2009, I have had to replace three (3) of them that became unreliable. Of course, I am going to buy another HP 12C, but hope to get more than two years use from it. It is still the best.

A Classic!
I bought the HP 12C Financial Programmable Calculator to replace my boyfriend's 25+ year old calculator of the same model. His old calculator's #5 key was working intermittently. The new calculator was a big hit and made his day :-) The ordering and shipping process went well too. Thanks for being such a great U.S. company!

A REAL WORKHORSE
The Gold-Case HP-12C is a workhorse; does just about everything most students will require. A plus is that the device seemingly lasts a lifetime! I have two of them. The RPN ("Reverse Polish Notation") feature makes it easier to do "chain" and arithmetic calculations. I'd like to add that the original 17BII along with the 19BII were the best devices for those who would or could write complex Solver-Equations, equations that required LET and GET capability.

Commercial Real Estate Calculators
I was told by many commercial real estate agents to buy the H.P. 12c calculator, it was worth the money and was a 'must have!' After purchasing it, I learned that it had limitted preprogramed functions for real estate and had nothing that a commercial agent would most commonly need for investment properties. i.e. R.O.I., Cash Flow, C.A.P. Rate, etc. Instead it was mainly for financing of loans, depreciation, and renting vs. owning affordability. Had I known that I would have to program it for commercial stats, especially having to learn how to program it which is unique in itself, I would never have bought this item. In fact, I am going to sell it to another person in the next class I take. If I can get my money back, I'll purchase instead the "Qualifier Plus IIIFX" for $79.95 + taxes, which does have the basics for commercial investment properties and it looks better. Technology has changed since the 12c was introduced in the 1980's and getting a calculator specifically designed for real estate is better than a financial calculator that can be used for commercial real estate.

Quality Concerns
I have purchased several HP 12cs over the years but I'm afraid the quality has slipped substantially. When I opened my recently purchased 12c, the black 'pleather' case was stuck to the packaging and whatever black man made material was used to make the case came off so I have a case that is marred on a brand new unit! Still a fan of the features and functionality but the quality concerns are disappointing to say the least.

These are the best
I had a 10b a few years ago and was disappointed with it. I have used various hp scientific calculators for work and school but still need to perform business math at the same time. I finally gave in and purchased one. It's great for date calculations and financing. These calculators have been around for 30 years and quite a few people still use the same model. They are built very well.

Super calculator
Hp has been making this calc for 30 years. Little has changed; nothing needs to be changed. This is pure, robust, calculation at its finest. Highly recommend. This is my second one in 30 years. The first was stolen by a curious baboon in Africa about 6 years ago. I waited until the current iteration to get a baboon-proff specimen. Don't know whether hp guarantees the current model against baboonv but it sure is sturdy. Hooray hp. Keep making as durable as the are.

I have been using an HP-12c calculator since 1971.
My 1971 HP-12c was finally retired a couple of years ago. Its only problem was the "2" button was faulty. I had purchased a "Platinum HP-12c" about three years ago to replace my original 12c. The pillow switches below the keys failed right away. By that time HP quit servicing the calculators. Stupidly, I bought another Platinum 12c and it too was defective in just months. I could not survive without a trusty HP 12-c and bought another one of the original 12-c design just recently. It seems to work alright and my fingers are crossed that it will finally take its place as the reliable HP calculator that was my side kick for so many years.

Over 20 years and still going
I have used other brands. They all wore out in a year or two. Bad keyboards. Poor functions. I finally purchased the 12c and I have never regretted it. THe RPN enter sequence is different thatn the others but took me about 5 minutes to get comfortable with it.
I notice a low review. I imagine that it was someone whe did not read the manual and use RPN. At the current price it is a steal.

I purchased my HP Financial Calculator in college. It was a requirement for my core Accounting courses. That was 23 years ago! It still works great! I used it through my college studies, in my accounting career, and now it sits beside our home computer. We use it every day. It's great for loan comparisons, such as when buying a car or house! Takes all the guess work out! We love it! Thanks HP!

Went bad way too soon.
I got my first HP 12C (American made) in 1989. It worked flawlessly until I left it on the seat of my car with the window open while it was raining. Over the last 15 years, I've purchased 3 new HP 12Cs. After about two years, the keys start sticking, keystrokes repeat themselves, keystrokes don't register, etc. The calculators always start to go bad after the warranty has expired and HP has never rectified the problem. If you look on other sites, many users have expressed the same concerns. You simply cannot be confident that your input is accurate. HP has to know this is a problem. It would be nice if they did something about it.

Calculation Corrections
I've used this product for almost 20 years for financial and accounting applications and it remains as reliable as ever. For those who referenced incorrect mortgage calculations, you have your settings programmed to calculate at the 'Beginning' of the monthly billing cycle, rather than the 'End'. To change, simply press the blue 'G' key and then the #8 key (end). In your scenario, the $200,000 mortgage at 5% interest for 30 years will result in $1,069.12 if you have it set to calculate at the Beginning cycle or will result in $1,073.68 if set to calculate at the 'End' cycle. You can toggle between Beginning and End cycles by pressing the blue 'G' key then pressing 7 (for Beginning) or 8 (for Ending).

HP-12
I bought one of the first HP-12's out (I think it was 1978 & cost
$119.95). I still use it today as I have every day since then. I have been a real estate broker, appraiser, & mortgage auditor. I have even taught classes in the use of the HP-12. The use has been terrific ! I have a couple of programmed functions I use all the time. The numbers have worn off the back; HP has replaced the pad several times, but the calculator never fails. It is impossible to outdo this unit for the money. Howelse could it still be in production this long?

Display Problems
I bought this calculator and I like it. The only problem is now the display segments don't all work. Internet research indicates that I need to take it apart and fix the ribbon connector to the display. I will try that but it is disappointing. I own an HP-45, HP-41CV and an HP-50G. The best quality calculator was the 41-CV. I will take apart my 12C and try to fix it. If I can't fix it the 12C was the most expensive for the number of usable keystrokes I got from it.

Outstanding product
I have owned the same HP12C for 25 years (since 1982), when it was the latest and greatest-it still is. After several years of dormancy, I recently purchased a new button cell battery, and it fired right up, just like 1982. This calculator performs financial calculations like nothing else handheld, including amortizations, bond yields, depreciation, present values, internal rates of return, and programmed functions. It is just as relevant and productive today as the day I bought it 25 years ago. I can perform complex financial calculations as quickly with my 12C as I can with my $700 PC. The operating manual is thoroughly and completely documented and provides immediate throughput explanation for anything you intend to perform.

miss calculation
I am in real estate and use hp-12c to calculate mortgages and other financial calculation for clients and am surprised that I have not been sued yet. THIS CALCULATOR GIVES OUT WRONG ANSWERS, FOR EXAMPLE $200,000.00 MORTGAGE AT 5% OVER 30 YEARS THE CALCULATOR'S ANSWER IS $1,069.19, BUT THE CORRECT ANSWER IS $1,073.68 OR 300,000.00 AT 5.875% OVER 15 YEARS THE CALCULATOR ANSWER 2,499.12 AND THE CORRECT ANSWER IS 2,511.36.
I own 2 HP-12c and they both give out the wrong answer. I figured this out when I bought my own house and noticed a big difference in my actual payment with hp-12c's number and ran the numbers in the MS-Excel. Excel's number match my actual mortgage payment.
Am I not using my HP correctly or HP is that careless?

Great tool, but fix the buttons
I've been using a 12C for 25 years - its a great tool. When sadly mine went missing (this one after at least 15 years), I was pleased to see it is still available and immediately ordered one. It is in all respects the same calculator except for the feel of the buttons. I know it may seem fussy, but these buttons have a cheap, tinny, hollow feel to them when pressing - not nice. The previous model, by contrast, had a very solid feel.

shocked
I was shocked when, perusing HP printers via an add on my e-mail, I wandered around to look into calculators, just to see what was up etc. When I scrolled down to see if the 12C was still around after seeing all the photos of the newer, cheaper models that are out today,I was amazed to see the 12C exactly as it was in 1983 when I purchased mine. What an awesome little calculator it is. buttons, display, battery life, all perfect. In a way, it's like the shark or the cockroach, in that the evolutionary line seems to have reached a perfection of sorts. Mine still works great when I use it; and my manual, although bound with duct tape, is still as helpful as ever.

Fast 12C, flawed keyboards from CY factory
The HP 12C, now in "+" form 150x as fast as original HP12C. The HP 12C remains the icon of financial mastery even today, and the lightening fast speed is a delight. Production runs from the Inventec CY factory (with the large % sign) can have unresponsive or sticky keys, though. Mine repeats numbers. I have used HP 12C's daily since the USA 1982 model. Other manufacturers may have calculators that run PV's, but only HP made a real-world financial calculator.

Considering alternative for the once supreme HP12C
Over the last several years, the what used to be "amazing quality" of the last couple HP's I've purchased (yes a couple in as many years) has been absent.... Prompting me to waist even more of my time to write this review. A myriad of problems from sticking keys to duplicate numbers when a key is pressed, to no number registering when a button is pressed..... I deal with millions of dollars everyday. We all know the significance of a missing digit. I'm looking at 3 HP's in front of me: One made in China, one in the Philippines, and one in Malaysia. It is so frustrating to know i can't depend on any of them.....

Buttons are not reliable.
For 22 yrs. I have loved my HP 12C. I've owned two. They were quick, reliable, accurate and dependable.
This past year I had to buy a new one. I saw many comments on the buttons and how they weren't as responsive as in the past. I would have thought HP would have addressed the issue by now. But they had not.
The disappointment is that the buttons are not responsive as they were in the past. This hurts my productivity. I've had to slow to a crawl on entering data to make sure the digits are properly registering. Even then, it will still miss. Too many times as I hit the buttons to store data in the financial register or in memory, it turns out that data never registered, and therefore when I run my calculations, I get wrong answers or errors.
I want to love my HP12C again. I would hope HP will address this issue and fix the buttons. We have to have confidence that when we hit a button it accurately and quickly records what we intended.

What happened to what was a great product
I bought my first 12c out of college in 1984 and it lasted until 2014. It was flawless for 30 years. Once It gave up I bought another one 2 years ago and it has been nothing but problems. Won't calculate, screen is bad sometimes only displaying the top half of the screen. What was once the industry standard is worthless now.

Old Reliable HP 12c
I've been using the 12c; since the early 70's, when it was
first introduced. I've been through two of them and am
working on my third 12c. Unfortunately the unit only last
a little over ten years. By the way, you don't have to worry;
one one will ever borrow it work a calculation.

The calculator that never dies
HP seemed very ahead of it's time when they created this because it has been around for so long! I remember when I was little my Dad had a 12c and I hated using it to do simple elementary math because it confused me, now flash forward to18 years later and I bought one of my own for graduate school and he still has his! Very impressive for a product to be so helpful and last so long at the same time! I highly recommend it!

So Far So Good!
After reading the many stories, and listened to those people who had used the older HP12C before, I carefully made my purchase. I agree with many of the folks who said that this was not exactly like the older models...It is true that the case was too small and therefore, it got pitched...I barely got the old case to fit the new case but this is exactly what I felt was needed. The old model that was made in Brazil was a bit heavier and the keyboard felt like a "superior" calculator! The new one is a bit cheaper and its definitely not like the new one. I have had the old since 1985 and used it regularly until recently when it died...But despite all the negatives, the new HP12C is still great! I don't know how long it will work and maybe HP will go back to the old manufacturing. I will stick this out and if I have to recommend it, I definitely would. Good luck to all of us who know the old from the new and still would make the purchase! Believe in us and stop searching because this is still one of the best financial calculators! Just Go For It!

Cheap compared to old one
Have owned a 12C since 1983. Dropped my old one, thought I woud replace and use old one for backup. New one feels cheap, keys don't work, case is useless. It's going back and I'm going to be very careful with my old 12C. Very disappointed.

Very nice calculator.
I wanted a good financial calculator that fits in my pocket nicely. This calculator fits perfectly, has all the functionality I need and is not heavy. It has a solid feel to it and is easy to use. My smartphone also does financial calculations but it is just not as nice as using my HP-12c.

If you demand the best...
This financial calculator and its scientific siblings are the gold standard of excellence and have been so for decades. There is no financial operation or computation or extrapolation or interpolation that is not possible with these handhelds.
The only requirement is that users join the big leagues by learning RPN--something that should be mandatory in high school. If they aren't willing to take that step, then they should not purchase a serious financial calculator.

Outstanding
Absolutely the best product I have ever bought. Purchased in 1984, I've used my 12C non-stop since then. The features are awesome, the flexibility amazing, the programmability is wonderful, and the durability is beyond description. It has very low battery usage, thus very long battery life. Within my lifetime (I'm 51), I've never had a product which has even come close to the 12C in terms of exceeding every expectation I had. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. Even the original slip case is still intact, after spending (literally) years in my shirt pocket. It has withstood drops, freezing overnights in cars, coffee spills, and my children. The keys don't click as crisply as they used to, but I find that makes it even easier to use - now my hands just glide across the keypad. What a great device!

Excellent Financial Calc
This calculator is a must have for every day use and easy to use too once you accustom to it. The one thing that I really wish HP add a little more feature into this model is the Profit Pricing Calculations I hope the next anniversary will have this especially for the HP-12C Platinum. Profit Pricing is when you have Cost, Price, Markup and Margin This is a must have for a Financial Calculator.

Prtoduct is unreliable
I had this calculator for 25 years and never had a problem, lost it and bought a new one. It worked for one month and the keys stuck, it was useless. So I bought another one thinking I was unlucky. The second one worked for about a month then the display started to fade. it too became useless. Changed batteries, did everything I could to get it to work. I guess I have to buy another one to see if it works.

Best calculator ever
I bought one of these when they were new on the market and I was a poor business graduate teaching assistant. II used it untl recently when it was stolen. It's helped me do all my personal financial planning, helped my kids with homework, and performed all professional work necessary. I changed batteries only twice in the entire time. Having the positive touch is important and the clean design is timeless. I have used other calculators on occasion, but this is the best.

The best and only calculator
The HP12c is the best and only calculator I use in my architectural practice. I bought one in 1979, made in the USA, and have replaced its batteries only once.
I painted all the gold plating and lines black to make the face of the calculator look simple, less nouveau riche regal. I always paint my name and telephone number in thick gobs of paint. The telephone number has changed though the calculator continues to perform well
I own two more 12Cs, the original one I keep it at work, the second one in my home office, and third is the spare for the briefcase if I have to go on the field.
I have given many away as Christmas presents.
Architects are not numerically inclined, but I have impressed more than one client for the simplicity in performing complex budgetary projections.
I paid $120 for the first one. Perhaps, $79.99 for the third one, though the price is trivial when I think of the billable hours it has brought into my practice.
My wife hates it because it does not work like a regular calculator, which is a virtue, since I know she will not borrow it under any circumstance.
Any improvements?
I would love to design a simple face for it, but would not change a function. Maybe introduce a few energy and insulation functions.

Not what it used to be
I have been using this calculator since 1988 - the first one last forever and the second one for a good while. The last two have been sub par. My current one is less than 2 years old and the keys stick or do not register leading to math errors daily. Very disappointed and sad about it. I guess you get what you pay for and since the price has dropped dramatically so has the quality.

RPN is back
I lost my HP-11 a few years ago in Hurricane Harvey. I tried using an app on my phone for a HP-15 but just wasn’t happy with the tactile feel of the keys. The HP-12 doesn’t do all the things I need as an engineer, but for many of my Project Management tasks the HP-12 works great. I’m glad I made the purchase.
When is HP going to bring back a replacement for the HP-15? I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

The "Energizer" of Calculators
This thing just keeps working! I bought mine in 1984 or 1985, I reconcile my checkbook, calculate all the refinances, etc. and I have yet to replace the battery! This thing just works and works and works. The other great thing is that the shape fits very well in your hand and it is very easy to hold the calculator and press the keys with your fingers. I have never had a case where I pressed a key and did not have it register as I have on some calculators with weak key pads. I also like the slip on case. I have copied some of the pages from the manual for operations I need to perform, like calculate mortgage payment, fold them up and just stick them in the case with the calculator where they are always handy.
Great product HP!

25 Years And Still Going!
I bought my HP 12C in 1985 when I started in real estate. It has been my financial calculator for 25 years and has never failed. I think I've only had to replace the batteries twice in all that time. It easily handles all real estate, banking, mortgage lending, investing and any other financial calculations you can think of. If you're so inclined you can program it for particular problems that you do repeatedly.
This is such a great calculator that I'm thinking of buying another one, just in case my 25-year-old stops working. (It's shown no such signs, but I wouldn't want to be without it.) If you're thinking about buying a financial calculator, look no further. You won't be disappointed with this one.

I bought my first HP 12C when they first came out.
I have taught RPN and stack archiecture to many, many people.

Died after a couple hours use
Similar to other reviewers, my new 12C lasted only a very short time before any key on one whole side of the keyboard would either cause an error or simply turn the calculator off. My old 11C has been going strong since I bought it in college 35 years ago (made in USA), and I use it every work day. Made in China 12C made it a few hours - nearly DOA. Tried new batteries and re-setting to no avail.

Flawed keyboard
Sticky keys!
To Temporarily fix it Reset the device by powering on while holding the minus sign. Make sure to hold the minus key for at least 10 seconds after releasing the ON button or else the sticky key syndrome returns.
I wish I realized the sticky key problem sooner so I could have returned it during the one year warranty period. I also that wish they still made the scientific version that let's you delete one digit at a time instead of clearing x entirely.
My 30+ year old 10c and 11c scientific calculators are FAR SUPERIOR made in USA products. They operate perfectly still to this very day.
The new 12c financial calculator is completely unreliable because of the sticky key problem. For example, enter 1 2 3 then look at the screen it will indicate 112233..
BEWARE!!!

Timeless and Perfect
I am 68 years old. I bought my first 12C in 1979. It still works perfectly. Batteries last seemingly forever. I have since purchased two more solely because if HP ever stops making them I want to be sure to have one available for life. It is that good. Nothing else I've tried is even close. This design should win an award for the longest continuous production run of a personal electronic device in history. I believe it's 30 years and counting in a world where months is a long time before obsolescence sets in.

The Best
I have been using my five HP 12C's since I first bought one in business school in 1977. It's still going strong and requires only the occasional change of batteries and it just keeps on keepin' on...
Great functionality, great performance, and great reliability. An ICON in my life from HP. I keep one handy at all my locations: at home by my computer, at work on my desktop, in my travel briefcase, at my offices in China and Japan... Truly a "must have" piece of equipment for business people.

shocked at poor quality
I am a HP fan, with HP laptop and desktops, and have used an HP 12C for more than two decades. I lost my original HP12C less than a year ago and had to replace it with another HP 12C, but the new one's screen goes blank unexpectedly when imputing numbers and prints error messages when there was no error and does this so often now that it must be replaced in less than a years ownership. Unclear why HP lowered the build quality on the product that made me an HP repeat customer. I would gladly pay more for better quality.

I have been happy with my prior HP calculators including the models 35,45,55, 67, 32SII,and 11C. To my mind, these calculators have been overwhelmingly important to my work and investing, second only to the development of the microcomputer.

Calculator=Great, Case=Not
Latest generation of calculator seems to process faster than my 7 year old predecessor (which I lost). IRR functions are quicker. Good thing the calculator is really works well, because the case is in a different class. I hate the case. It’s cheap, thin, vinyl material. It doesn’t hold its shape where I can easily reinsert the calculator without having to squeeze it in. The case was stuck to the package when I opened it. Peeling it off the package left material on the case, which will not come off. Now I have line running the length of the case. My old case was much better quality. Geez HP, I’m willing to pay top dollar for the unit. It would be nice to have a case that was of equal quality to the calculator.
