Rated 5 out of 5 by from The materials stink and feel toxic on touch The keyboard’s magnet couldn’t support the iPad in the Zagg case provided in the package and need a keyboard-connected plastic/rubber folder to hold the iPad/case in place. Not a keeper. I had the original Zagg messager keyboard case when I initially purchased the iPad but the hinge wouldn’t last for a year. Prior to that, Zagg used to offer good quality but now it is just another substandard manufacture.

This does not fit the bill for getting the iPad to stand at a comfortable viewing position. I like the hinged version better. I had two of those and the problem was the material around the iPad case kept coming apart and wouldn’t hold the iPad in. Otherwise the hinged case was exactly what I wanted. I wish Zagg would come up with another.

However, the keyboard suddenly stopped responding -after a month - even though it was paired. Can’t seem to find an LED light that is supposed to tell me if it’s charging. The first zagg I owned had the ribbon supporting the stand break and couldn’t be fixed. This one will be more long lasting, I can tell!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional & sturdy This is a sturdy case and the keyboard is highly functional. The backlight function is nice in dim igniting, and the keys have a good feel. I like the adjustable angles of the back. The stylus holder at the top is a nice feature. The one downside (for me; for some reviewers, it is a positive) is how easily the iPad can be removed from the keyboard. I think I will get used to that, but for now, it’s kinda bothersome. I’m used to picking up and moving the iPad/keyboard as an open unit still working as I’m walking around and you absolutely can’t do that with this — not sturdy enough. Need to shut the case, move from Point A to Point B and then open it again.

The replacement does the same thing. Evidently the sticking keys problem is common enough that other people have written blogs about it. Save your money and buy a Logitech.

I take my iPad everywhere so I take the keyboard with me every where, it works great. The reason I have had to replace the keyboard a couple of times is because I drip food on it or spill my drink, the keys start to stick. It is a great keyboard and does provide some protection for my iPad. It is a five star product times two !!

That keyboard does not perform the basic functions, i.e. battery check, backlighting or color changes. I’ve owned a Rugged Messenger for 3 years and need a replacement because the IPad support is weakening. Is there a chance I can receive a functioning keyboard of request a refund on my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect until the keyboard gets wet. I love this keyboard-case. I’m clumsy and when I drop it it doesn’t break. The problem is getting any liquid on the keyboard is a killer. I’ve gone through about 5 of these things in the last couple years. I’ve been looking for a soft silicon like keyboard shield. I have one for my 8 year old PowerBook and it still works like magic. If they sold one, or if I could find one elsewhere this would be a 5 star review.

This is a wonderful keyboard allowing for fast texting using real English rather than cryptic spelling! The keyboard quality, magnetic insert, and bluetooth are outstanding!

There are aspects of the Book I like better than the Messenger, but the Messenger has some attributes I appreciate over the Book. You can’t have everything in life. I really am pleased with this Messenger and would have no problem purchasing another one if it is available for any new iPad we will be getting for my wife.

I like the way it fits behind the keyboard by a magnet. The stand behind the iPad (which is part of the keyboard case) is nice since you can recline the iPad at different angles. With the case closed, everything is well protected. My only concern is how long the plastic on the folding stand will last with taking it down and putting it up multiple times over the course of a year or two. Only time will tell. But overall, a great keyboard case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional, Protective Productivity Improver This is the second Rugged Messenger I've bought. I pretty much literally used the first one to death. But aside from "using up" the electronics (the keyboard is no longer usable from using it with the iPad as if it were a laptop), the case has always protected the iPad wonderfully. Unlike other iPad cover/keyboard units, this keyboard doesn't come on automatically when you open the cover. This helps increase battery life, but I had to get used to a delay between striking a key and the keyboard turning on. No big deal, but something to be aware of. The keyboard "feels like" it's about 3/4 sized. I got used to it really easily, and it feels very natural to type on. Having a "real" keyboard makes many things you might do with an iPad much easier. The on-screen keyboard doesn't offer a cursor function; precisely moving the cursor to where you want to add text is awfully challenging for me with the on-screen keyboard. And the keyboard has volume keys! Using the iPad's volume buttons is OK, but it's much quicker to just press the "mute" key. The keys will show skin oil after a bit, but just cleaning them with a dry, lint-free cloth takes care of that. Also the outside of the Messenger will show some contact with desk/table/etc. surfaces - a damp cloth cleans it well. This is a very useful, very dependable addition to my iPad Air 3, and will be just as useful with the iPad Pro.

It was wore-out and some of the keys no longer worked so I recently purchased the same model. Unfortunately, the design appears to have changed as the magnet does not hold the screen in place when the keyboard is folded under. I cannot use and am looking for another case. Very disappointed as the previous case had worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haven't received the merchandise So far customer service as been alright. But instead of getting The Rugged Messenger for iPad, I received a Co2 cartridge. I don't even know what it's used for. It's certainly not useful to me. Honestly I wouldn't be more surprised if I had received a Zebra instead of the keyboard/case. BTW my iPad is only 9.7. If you can fix this before you send it out that would be greatly appreciate. Customer service is working the first issue which is to return the Co2 cartridge. So don't start jumping up and down yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rugged Messenger Cover for iPad Pro 10.5 My previous same keyboard with Zagg, space bar stopped working, reordered another one. Previous one has all keys light up, when I turned it on, all keys lite up. This new one, not so much. Very limited keys light up, off/on button does not light up. Called customer service and asked their procedures, do I send it back for replacement? They indicated I need to pay $9.95 for shipping (after I complained for their product not meeting expectations, he reduced to $4.95) I still complained, why should I have an expense for a product that is advertised with backlit lighting not meet expectation! I really like this keyboard, easy to use so I guess I use this one until need for replacement and will definitely be shopping for another company. Zagg not so good on this one!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Misfit defect or ? Purchased my new rugged messenger case and keyboard and wa disappointed with it. Seems the Oder from it is annoying and the fit isn’t exact. My old one you could just close it and my pad would shut down. This you have to fumble with it to make that happen. Nit real happy about this and the Oder. The Oder I thought would wear off but it hasn’t yet. Maybe it’s a defective item. Not sure. It does seem so be a little off from a perfect fit.

Only complaint aside from that is that there's no way to use the stand portion of the case without the keyboard, so when I'm using this as a second monitor the keyboard is still out and in the way on my desk.

The touch for the space bar requires a hard push—so many times there is no space between words when typing rapidly. Do not like the cover over the charge connector. All in all, a decline in design and quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the "Rugged Messenger", but... This is my third "Rugged Messenger." I love the protection and sturdiness it provides. The keyboard is a nice plus, but not critical. Originally having a separate keyboard was imperative, but I find I didn't use it as often as I anticipated. One negative, and it is a problem. My two prior Rugged Messengers deteriorated rapidly. Within two years of purchase the rubber/plastic exterior began pealing and coming off in small pieces. The overall product still function, the keyboard worked and the protection was fine, but I didn't like the look and feel of a product shedding its cover. When I talked with Zagg customer service, they said it was beyond the warranty, so they could not help me. I did purchase a new cover because I like it, but I was disappointed in the sturdiness of the cover and lack of customer service assistance.

So I purchased a replacement. The replacement looks fairly identical however the magnet isn’t as good as the previous one. The keyboard light is no longer blue as the previous one instead it is more bright. Haven’t used the keyboard as much so I can’t speak on the feel of the keyboard. Overall so far so good just wish the magnetic backing to hold up the iPad was stronger

After several years of abuse, my old one started to shed some of the outer rubber covering. It did not affect function, but I needed a better image. Other than the bluetooth connection dropping sporadically, it is a great unit. It fits differently than the older unit, and the stand sometimes slips on my lap -- but overall I am very satisfied with it's performance.

CONS: I don’t like how the magnets that keep the iPad up, slips a little. So I constantly have to adjust it. I also don’t like how heavy it is compared to my original Zagg keyboard case that’s unfortunately been discontinued. I love Zagg and I’ll forever be a customer (since 2017) they have AMAZING customer service and they’ve always treated me right.

About 6 months ago we started to notice the cover, on all sides, began to disintegrate. It finally just started breaking away in little pieces. The keyboard remained in perfect condition. We ended up having to give in and buy a new one because of the great keyboard - NOT the “Rugged” cover - not rugged at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved # 1 but #2…… I loved my first Zeg keyboard but it died after 2 1/2 years. By died I mean several of the keys did not work and some of them were falling off and nobody could seem to fix it. I bought another one directly from Zagg and it is a beautiful device but nowhere on the website could I find how to change the colours of the back lighting, nor could I figure out which keys were supposed to be the ones that look like half of a son that was on the Quickstart piece of paper. It does not correspond to any keys on the Zagg keyboard. The website was very unhelpful for identifying what the various Fm keys do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New designs are just OK Have used ZAGG for years, have had a iPad mini keyboard/protector for 6 years, use all the time, getting limp at hung but still functions well opening and closing. Also showing wear due to age and use. Bought a new iPad and ordered a ZAGG keyboard/protector. Nowhere near as robust and the removable screen section removable from the keyboard is a real pain for me, should have someway to connect and remove if you want to, the magnet disengages unless you hold the two pieces together. Have dropped both the keyboard and pad at different times. Luckily the protection functionality is adequate or it would be in the trash.

Some of the buttons were stuck right out the box, and I had to become an engineer for a few minutes! I got them to work properly and haven't had any issues, but it's irritating to have to take time to do all that with a supposed finished product

This is an excellent case / keyboard / Apple Pencil holder alternative to the much more expensive Apple case offering. So good I had zero issue purchasing the same product to replace the old one five years later! ??

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The materials stink and feel toxic on touch The keyboard’s magnet couldn’t support the iPad in the Zagg case provided in the package and need a keyboard-connected plastic/rubber folder to hold the iPad/case in place. Not a keeper. I had the original Zagg messager keyboard case when I initially purchased the iPad but the hinge wouldn’t last for a year. Prior to that, Zagg used to offer good quality but now it is just another substandard manufacture.

Just received this replacement and some of the keys don’t work. I’m so frustrated. I love how rugged it is but none of these keyboards work properly. I’m done buying from Zagg. The reason I gave two stars is because customer service was good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Faulty Keyboard This is the 2nd replacement keyboard order since 5/13/21. The initial keyboard backlight key became dislodged and a replacement was sent on 5/30. That keyboard does not perform the basic functions, i.e. battery check, backlighting or color changes. I’ve owned a Rugged Messenger for 3 years and need a replacement because the IPad support is weakening. Is there a chance I can receive a functioning keyboard of request a refund on my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the "Rugged Messenger", but... This is my third "Rugged Messenger." I love the protection and sturdiness it provides. The keyboard is a nice plus, but not critical. Originally having a separate keyboard was imperative, but I find I didn't use it as often as I anticipated. One negative, and it is a problem. My two prior Rugged Messengers deteriorated rapidly. Within two years of purchase the rubber/plastic exterior began pealing and coming off in small pieces. The overall product still function, the keyboard worked and the protection was fine, but I didn't like the look and feel of a product shedding its cover. When I talked with Zagg customer service, they said it was beyond the warranty, so they could not help me. I did purchase a new cover because I like it, but I was disappointed in the sturdiness of the cover and lack of customer service assistance.

My ipad fits into the case perfectly, nice and tight. Shipping was very good, you kept me informed as to were my package was and when it would be delivered. The only con is that it is heavy for my 78 yr. old arthritic hands to carry. With that being said I don't need to carry it much and I should have gotten a clue when I saw "rugged" in the name! So glad I have it !

Setting up the keyboard is super easy and the ease of switching between devices is ridiculous. There is no reason to not love this product for the price. If this one lasts, I’d happily buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rugged, but keep it dry Have dropped it MANY times over the years and it protects. The weak link is that the keyboard does not tolerate liquids. I researched for a water proof cover for the keyboards, but couldn’t find one to fit. (I’ve used similar covers for multiple MacBook Pro laptops with out fail.) I’ve gone through 3 or 4 due to my getting the keyboard wet. The last one lasted a few years, but finally the keyboard charge port got bent, hence my new one. Happy they still make it. No planning on getting a new I pad for a long time. When I do this will be the first place I look for a case/keyboard. If the below questions of Rugged were divided into fall protection they get a 10 our of 5. If it were to ask about tolerance to wet exposure 1 our of 5. Performance gets a 5/5. Occasionally I would have to re connect the blue tooth link with the i pad. Occasionally the keyboard would turn off during a pause, but just turn it back on.

I do use my iPad a lot and was pleased with the original Rugged Messenger until it started peeling. It did protect my iPad so that is why I purchased another one. I would rate it high even though it started peeling.

I take my iPad everywhere so I take the keyboard with me every where, it works great. The reason I have had to replace the keyboard a couple of times is because I drip food on it or spill my drink, the keys start to stick. It is a great keyboard and does provide some protection for my iPad. It is a five star product times two !!

She uses them a lot so I realize they fail after time but this last purchase hasn't last two months and half the keys have stopped working. It will be my last purchase from Zagg for sure!

And even then, the “folded” cover requires extra room when in use for a lean-to. Best part is the pencil storage…thankfully they kept that from the original slim book. Older model (unfortunately not available any more) was much better for multi positions of iPad.

Also needs magnet on keyboard in front of space bar so device is easy to use for reading and takes up less space than when in full keyboard mode. In lieu of magnets, have some kind of kickstand on the back cover (see Logitech)

The replacement has had an issue with numerous keys not working when typing. That was a problem. Last week I requested a replacement online and am awaiting its delivery. I am hoping #2 was just an isolated issue. I really like the product. The really good news is Zaggs service portal was excellent. It was easy to request a replacement for the defective equipment and that worked better than most companies. Good job there. Randy Mercer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Improvement needed! Zag no longer makes the “hard body†style. I like to use my iPad while reclining and watching television. This does not fit the bill for getting the iPad to stand at a comfortable viewing position. I like the hinged version better. I had two of those and the problem was the material around the iPad case kept coming apart and wouldn't hold the iPad in. Otherwise the hinged case was exactly what I wanted. I wish Zagg would come up with another.

The touch for the space bar requires a hard push—so many times there is no space between words when typing rapidly. Do not like the cover over the charge connector. All in all, a decline in design and quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional & sturdy This is a sturdy case and the keyboard is highly functional. The backlight function is nice in dim igniting, and the keys have a good feel. I like the adjustable angles of the back. The stylus holder at the top is a nice feature. The one downside (for me; for some reviewers, it is a positive) is how easily the iPad can be removed from the keyboard. I think I will get used to that, but for now, it's kinda bothersome. I'm used to picking up and moving the iPad/keyboard as an open unit still working as I'm walking around and you absolutely can't do that with this — not sturdy enough. Need to shut the case, move from Point A to Point B and then open it again.
