Desktop Drives vs. WD Red Plus

Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance.

Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren't typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red Plus drives are.

Error Recovery Controls: WD Red Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system.

Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

WD Red Plus NAS Hard Drive WD40EFRX - hard drive - 4 TB - SATA 6Gb/s is rated 4.82 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Good Speed in 4x NAS RAID5 (X-RAID) configuration My #1 concern when I bought these was making sure my selection was specifically designed for a NAS environment. Reliability and long life being the keys. I was very skeptical at the 5400RPM figuring it would be terrible performance not even able to soak a 1GbE on write. You know what? It's not terrible at all. One reason is because of them being in RAID5 due to stripe and better write speeds than RAID6. This is over a 1GbE LAN. For a 10GbE or as an internal drive I can't speak, but I would expect them to fall short on performance in those scenarios. For read on the LAN they of course soak. However, for 1GbE with my NAS dual bond (LACP) and using jumbo frames I constantly get 100+MB/s write speed to the NAS from my main rig. This write speed is what surprised me. I expected far less. Note this relates to large files. For thousands of small files it's quite close to this, which was an even larger surprise. I've yet to have any of the drives fail - they've been installed since [at-least] Thu Jun 4 2015 based on my NAS logs, and spinning 24/7. In that time they've processed many, many TB of data and there's not a single log entry from any of the drives. Zero. Nada. That is really impressive. What's not impressive is copying or moving internally where it's copying / moving / deleting files since it's the most extreme random read write trim operations. For these scenarios they can drop in raw throughput substantially. If I were constantly moving folders and files around - inside - the NAS this would be an issue. For my day to day this is simply not a common use case so it's no impact to me at all. If you need to - constantly - copy and/or move files around - within - the same drive you're likely better off with higher RPM. For all other scenarios where the content is writing to them or reading from them as the majority work load, and where your max transfer rate is a 1GbE - I can definitely recommend these drives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Drives. Time will tell about reliability! I used 4 of these in a Netgear NAS box for backup purposes, so no live critical data. So far they have been humming along fine with no failures. They seem to be quiet, cool and so far a very reasonable investment. I prefer to buy drives at CDW vs. the other places due to packaging alone. I have not had a DOA from them yet.
