Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worst Otterbox buy ever I had high hopes regardin this protection box for the new iPad Pro 12,9” but got badly disappointed. The Apple Pencil works really poorly through the plastic screen cover. I had to stop using it. I have the same product for my iPad Pro 10,5” too. I never tested it with the pencil but I’ Using it as navigator in my boat. When the weather is warm, in Finland it means 24 or more degrees Celsius, the iPad gets over heated in Otterbox. That’s also really irritating as you have to stop and wait until it has cooled down.

The hard case and stand is ok. Would like more levels of adjustment. Do not like flap where pencil goes. It should be removed completely. Other than that it’s a great case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product. 1 issue. I really like the product. Only real gripes are the part where you charge the pencil and how it fits into the shell for standing. Maybe it should have been a piece that comes completely off? I fear that the way the rubber bends while charging the pencil will make it wear or warp faster. Also the iPad is too snugly fit into the stand and because of that you can’t have that slight tilt for viewing mode. If I could give it a 4.5 if I could since these issues aren’t major but wouldn’t exactly give it a 5.

The stand in the most upright position is almost vertical, making the iPad want to tip. The case I have for the 10.5” version does not do this. Lastly, the touch screen is somewhat less responsive with this case on. Again, not an issue with my older Otterbox case.

Not as heavy as another brand that I purchased while waiting for this to come into stock-and that one didn’t even come with a cover. Lastly-appreciate the ability to charge the 2nd gen pencil. BUT not sure how durable the cover would be-from opening and closing it to be able to charge the pencil. Only time will tell...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT CASE, almost perfect. I purchased the iPad to replace my laptop, so I needed something that will protect the device. After having tried just about all of the case options, Otterbox is the best case on the market; there are only two features that I did not like. (1) I use a glass screen protector (RhinoShield - also the best on the market), and after putting on the case, the iPad would not recognize touch, so I had to remove the plastic screen from Otterbox. (2) The pencil doesn't fit inside the case; you open a flap to connect and recharge, I would have preferred adding to the width of the case to be able to keep the pencil enclosed with the iPad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Otterbox 3rd Generation Defender Seems sturdy. Haven't dropped it yet so can't judge. Apple Pencil charges. However the Instructions state there are four positions. The reference to four positions is misleading. They include the portrait versus the landscape positions on both. There are really only two positions with the stand. Almost Straight up or laid down for typing. (Too far down) Would give five stars if it had a medium slant position. ( See photos attached.)

But the otterbox 12.9 3rd generation has a major flaw when using the stand.it sits straight up and lays down. Unlike the 10.5 case that has a little tilt. If the clip was more centered then it would be perfect . I’m afraid it will tilt and when it sits next to me it’s stands almost. Straight up completely vertical. Which has no ability to comfrontly to type in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what I need it to. The case is what you would expect from OtterBox. It’s solid and will protect my iPad. I did make two modifications. Using a blade I cut out the screen protector. If you want a review of that aspect of the case I can’t give it to you. I don’t understand why they put it on there anyway. The case itself comes with a cover that protects the screen while I am in transit. And I don’t like having a screen protector when I’m using the iPad. The second modification was to remove the cover to the Apple Pencil charging area. It made access to the charging area too cumbersome. I have quick access to my Apple Pencil without it. In removing this cover, it has made the rubber outer part of the case a little more flimsy in this area. I might take a little glue and tack it down which will put my iPad in the case relatively permanently. But I never take it out anyway. I wish the outer case/stand had more viewing angles. I don’t use angles that it is capable of. But if it’s solid protection you want, with relatively minimal girth added, and still have access to the Apple Pencil charging area, this is the case for you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid case for industrial environments This OtterBox is perfect for those in an industrial setting. Hard cover to to protect against falls, oils, and other nasty things you’ll find on the bottom of your boots. It also provides the right amount of grip and doesn’t slide out of your hands. It has a silicone flap to open in order to charge your pencil and stores permanently under the hard shell, but looks like an after thought compared to other products. I think this case would be better served slightly wider to accommodate permanent storage for the pencil while charging. The hard, detachable shell is sturdy and unclips as easily as you would want it to, without fear that it would unintentionally separate. When it’s detached, it’s design to clip onto the back side of the iPad, leaving the screen exposed. This is handy to ensure you keep shell and iPad together and not loose the shell. The only draw back to this design is that it now covers the camera. Obviously we can all live with that. Just put the shell down and snap your photos, but it would be nice to have a slide bar to expose the camera quickly. The protective shell also doubles as a stand for your iPad which is another plus. All said and told, this case does exactly what I bought it for. A rugged and durable case to protect my pretty new tool. It’s quality and perfect for anyone who brings their iPad out onto the factory floor. Hopefully future design would consider widening the case to provide a permanent home where the pencil can charge neatly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Touch Doesn't Work Well I have used this product for about two weeks and the thin plastic screen affects how touch inputs and gestures are processed on the iPad. This issue is not limited to only this product (from what YouTube tells me), but it surely is a problem with this case. When the user attempts to use simple gestures like scrolling, about 40% of the time the iPad screen does not register the gesture. This issue is specifically highlighted towards the edges of the display (or I am just using the edges more). For some reason, when you use a finger more vertical (perpendicular) to the display it seems to work best. Using a fat thumb like mine for scrolling while holding the iPad simply doesn't work. Insert super sad face here... Additionally, the product pictures made it seem (at least to me) like the Apple Pencil had a special place where the case covered the Pencil as it was charging and kept it locked into place so the user could walk around without issue. Basically the case has a rubber flap that comes off to allow for charging, but you would still have the same issues of carrying around the Pencil while charging. Granted - I haven't ever had my Pencil even come close to not fully charged, but if you were hoping to have protection to charge the Pencil as you walk around or when it's thrown into a backpack you're going to be sorely mistaken. I think if you are used to Otterbox products (rubberized bump protection) you will feel at home with this case. This is my first Otterbox product and while it is overall an OK design, for the reasons mentioned above I wouldn't recommend it to a stranger for it's price. Having the touch inputs and gestures not working should be a deal breaker for even the staunchest Otterbox fans. Who knows, maybe all the problems lie with Apple, but for now I'll have to research other options...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard and Heavy Having bought the new iPad Pro, I was concerned about reports of it bending easily. The Otterbox Defender protects it fully and is hard and sturdy and offers great protection. I wish it were a little lighter, but that is the price you pay for excellent protection. It is not as easy to use with the Apple keyboard as I thought it would be, but I use my iPad for gigs and needed something to offer full protection and the Defender certainly does offer that protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Meh it’s an otterbox Not much to really say so here it is... as always I can’t stand the plastic screen protector that comes with it so I ripped that right out. (I actually tried it on the iPad before doing this and the screen just wouldn’t let me use the gesture feature to go back to the home page) once I removed the screen protector I enjoyed the experience. Now let’s talk about the terrible stand options... if you’re thinking about buying this you need to know you have only two options. Yes I said TWO, you either get it standing straight up or laying down in a drawling position. The stand gets a 1/5 The screen protector gets a 0/5 The case it’s self gets a 4/5. overall I bought this to avoid bending while traveling. If you want it just for that you will enjoy it. If you want it for stand options or a great screen protector, you might wanna try a different case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over protective Over protective is just what you want when dealing with a device this fragile. I love it. It makes me feel safe and secure when putting it in a backpack or briefcase or even just leaving it on the couch. Before I had this case I was constantly terrified of something happening to my expensive and delicate work tool but now I am worried free. I've seen a lot of people complain about the stand that is built into the hard shell and while I understand their complaints dot-dot. You really shouldn't be buying this case for its kickstand buy it because you can leave your device on the couch and accidentally sit on it without destroying the most expensive tablet you have ever bought.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy as expected As so many others have mentioned, I'm disappointed in the stand with extremely limited / useless options and the terrible pencil storage (just a flap that will eventually tear). I waited a long time to purchase after getting my Pro in hopes of a better case. It never happened as Otterbox did not listen to the customers and did not revamp the case. Ultimately I bought it only for the much needed protection and it works for that purpose although it is expensive. If you use the stand on your cases, which I normally do, you'll need to buy something in addition to this case. If you use the pencil, you'll need a storage option for that as well.

I have been purchasing otter boxes since 2013 and they haven't failed me so far.

I was surprised how much heavier it is, but it is totally protected in case you drop it. I use it for gigging and have all my sheet music loaded on it so I need the extra protection.

I had this case for my 9.7 inch iPad Pro and the rubber backing got all stretched and weird but that’s not a problem on this case at all. The one downside is that the screen cover messes with the touch sensitivity. I need to press a little bit harder I’m order to do exactly what I want but that’s not really a bother, I got used to it. All in all I love this case and I definitely recommend it, especially if you’re worried about the 2018 iPad’s bending.

The screen protector on this one doesn‘t work so well so you have to touch twice very often. Writing this review is not as nice as without the protector. I think it is not the right material. It was so much better on my old one... Otherwise it is a nice protector. Maybe it is just mine becorse I ordered in the first hours

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Impressed This case is at least the 5-6 Otterbox case that I have purchased and this was the first time I’ve been disappointed. 1 - the screen cover makes typing a nightmare and around the edges not overly responsive. 2 - the Apple Pencil can’t be left changing while the outer case is on 3 - the Apple Pencil holder on the outer case does not securely hold the Apple Pencil as it always falls out 4 - the positions that the stand is capable of aren’t great, either straight up or basically laying flat on the table 5 - the charging port is difficult to access if the outer case is on but not covering the screen Overall this product just seems like it was rushed.

Every single one I’ve bought has had to have it removed because Otterbox is in the stone age with the screen saver portion. Just leave it off!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy duty This Defender makes the iPad Pro 12.9 quite heavy BUT it really helps my anxiety about sneezing and snapping the flimsy thing in half. I have 3 Defenders for different Apple devices and all of them make them heavy which makes me trust them. I'm having some little issues with the touchscreen not recognizing taps sometimes and the cable port cover can be a nuisance, but if you made it easy to use, I guess it'd shear right of so... Anyway, I recommend it for clumsy fumbling butterfingers like mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great with one major exception Ihave had my lasted otterbox for a few weeks now. As allows the protection of the case is second to none. The stand feature is even more secure than my previous otterbox for my old ipad pro 12.9 first generation. The only downside is the screen protector. From the moment i put my case on i noticed difficulty in using the touch screen. Presses would not register at times and swiping was a challenge. At times it would be worse than others but it was always evident. I did a little research and apparently the new ipad is having trouble being used with screen protectors. Unfortunately this isn't a flaw with the ipad as its not designed with a screen protector in mind nor is it necessarily a flaw with the otterbox as well as they have no control over the apple products. I still love the protection the otterbox gives so as for now my solution is to remove the screen protector from my case. I now have no problems using my ipad third generation and will just do without a screen protector for now. I will say the screen protector on this case seems very thick.

Had to remove plastic screen The built in screen protector is not compatible with the glass screen protector on my 2018 12.9 inch iPad Pro so I had to improvise and remove the plastic screen completely. Makes my iPad bulky and heavy but I’m confident that my investment is secured. I like the outer cover which can act as a stand. Would give it 5 stars but my Otterbox arrived late and the screen issue. I was mislead when I got the email saying the iPad Pro case is available with 2-day free shipping but it took 8 days until my case arrived.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good standard coverage...except for the pencil I've always been satisfied with otterbox products and the amount of protection they provide. So when I purchased the 2018 iPad 12.9, otterbox was my first choice. The defender does adequate protection against drops and scratches with the silicone and the screen protector. The only downfall I have is that I wish the silicone cover for where the pencil charges would close with the pencil attached instead of just hanging there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unhappy I needed otterbox product, and I got it, but I expected some thing more... 1. The protection screen is not perfectly sensitive to the pen. 2. The "two only angles" of screen support is a bummer. 3. Expected (so I understood from the pictures, maybe I was wrong) that the pen will be tucked in while charging. All this opening and closing will tear the cover for sure and requires from me an additional "pen storage" witch is very delicate as well... So, I love otterbox. "Many times over" client. Will buy again and will advise to do so to my friends, but I just expected more.

Very happy with it.

If you have the cover attached to the back of the case, it blocks access to the cover where the charge cable plugs into. You have to take the cover off the back of the case to open the flap and plug in the charging cable

The replacement is better but not perfect. Also, the upright position is way too steep, always wants to tumble forward. Go back to angle on older designs. (Of which I’ve worn out two, and think they’re great!

Didn’t have this issue on my old IPad Air 2 with the same Otterbox Case. Very good protection tho around the entire iPad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bulky and heavy. Great protection. Charging system for Apple Pencil is a bit unwieldy. Difficult if you’re in a hurry. If you already have a tempered glass screen protector on the flimsy plastic OtterBox screen protector must be removed. Not enough choices for angling the device. That being said, why would you put $1000 plus device in a $20 case?

Screen is very sporatic for touch, cant charge pencil without taking top apart, very bulky, only one position for standing up and no position for vertical view

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent protection at a cost in responsiveness The case provides all-round protection for the iPad but the plastic screen cover impairs responsiveness to touch and gestures. The rubber cover on the on/off button sometimes needs pressing several times to switch the device off. You have to push and press the button and screen more aggressively than you would without the added protection.

I have decided to let go of the thin profile, and purchase the otterbox defender series. Otterbox is known for its rugged profile, so I am satisfied with that, however the weight is an issue I have to deal with.. It is heavy! But I will not return it. I do not want to risk my iPad from being broken, Again.

After the money I paid for my 12.9 inch, 1TB 2018 iPad Pro, I would not trust any other case for protecting my investment. Strong, Sturdy, and Super Protective! You can never have too much protection for todays micro thin technology. Case adds a little weight just enough to give you something to grip on without damaging your Tech. A must have case for your iPad Pro!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well-made protection for my new iPad I first used an Otterbox to protect my Samsung phone; that has saved my phone many times! When I purchased a new iPad, I looked for a good case to protect it and couldn't anything close to the Otterbox to keep it safe. It fit perfectly and has all the padding and screen protection to keep it safe from drops and spills. Great product! The only small issue was accessing the charging port when the cover is on the back of the iPad (in it's "storage" position). Over-all, very satisfied.

The angles of which the ipad can be mounted is limited. For me, it only appears to position the ipad on 2 angles. An in between angle would be good, a 45 degree perhaps.

I mean seriously, Otterbox, you knew the new iPad was coming out, why not time the release a little better? So the good news- it’s an Otterbox. Tough and durable. Excellent protection. The bad news- the angles are off. On older models, which absolutely will not work on the gen 3 iPad, the iPad sat upright, but slightly leaning back so it was well balanced. With this model, the iPad sits dead straight, so if things aren’t absolutely level it has a tendency to fall forward. It’s still a great case, most likely the best one out there, but come on, for what this case costs, they could have done this correctly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wrong viewing angles We have an otterbox for our older smaller ipad so we bought another otterbox for our new 12.9 ipad pro. The otterbox is perfect except the angles the ipad can sit in the cradle for viewing. It is either too straight up and down (which is also unstable) or too flat. It is very disapointing that is does not have the viewing angles like old one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Protective. Bought this for my new 12.9 iPad Pro 3rd gen because I heard it would protect against bending. I do not like the flap for the Apple pencil. I feel like in time, the flap will tear and break off. It isn't ideal to keep the pencil attached on the side of the Apple Pencil because it doesn't protect the side of the iPad. I do not like the plastic screen protector because it looks very cheap. For a $130 case, I wish they'd upgrade this. I know I can just tear it and add my own screen protector BUT ITS A $130 CASE and it should already have a decent screen protector.

It’s either having your iPad standing straight up or to low. I wish they would of design it to have it in different levels. I will be returning this back tomorrow and purchasing something else where I can angle my iPad in different levels. So the bottom line is if your looking for protection this is the product but that it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid performance I purchased this case 1 weeks ago and it’s build quality is unreal. Provides excellent protection to the iPad Pro 12.9inch. Not worried about dropping it now. It even houses the Apple Pencil and has a latch that can be opened in order to charge the Pencil. An excellent case - just hope the rubber shell in it lasts the distance.

You can’t prop up the ipad in a comfortable angle. It’s either straight vertical or barely an angle to see the screen. I’d wish it was positioned better to prop the iPad at a 60 degree angle for better viewing.

I use the iPad as a second screen for my MacBook Pro, but the viewing angle is all wrong. It's no use for watching any sort of video either. Ive attached photo to this review to show the difference in "angle" between my laptop in a typical use-position, with the iPad behind it. I would not have bought this if I had realised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Typical Otter Quality and Great Protection Overall the IPad Gen 3 12” Defender is great as usual. Two things to look at though. The hard plastic cover is difficult to remove from the iPad. Takes two hands to push the corner off. Also if the hard cover is attached to the back of the iPad for stoage, the rubber flap over the USB port is difficult to access. I love the Defender series though. It’s on all our mobile Apple products.

However they have changed the angle that the front snap on cover holds the iPad at. On previous cases it was more of an angle were as the new cover holds the iPad at almost vertical which I don’t like. Also the plastic built in screen protector caused extreme lag and diminished touch sensitivity. Case is still great, just not as amazing as my last one

It protects well and if there’s a problem and the belt clip breaks for the phone they replace it. However. I recently bought a 12.9 I pad pro without home button. Newest model. When the otter box finally came out I find it to be wanting. The worst thing is you have to watch the I pad straight up and down. There is no angle to the up position. It tips over a lot. The second option is almost flat. That’s no good either if your laying down watching a movie. They need to redesign this. It protects well.

As an electrician Im always on the go and I really need a case that protects my device and gives it a ninja grip. As usual otterbox creates well thought products and gives the user a peace of mind. I really like this case.. the only minor point is the build in screen protector (some times it blocks my fingers input.. for example some characters are not registered while typing)

The new iPad Pro 12.9 came out and unfortunately, no one was selling a protection case at the time. Finally, I was able to purchase the newest otterbox right off the drawing board....and its GREAT! Worth every penny!

The 90 deg angle makes it impossible to use in that configuration and it does not fit into the stand and the angle is just wrong.

Must admit that the viewing angles are not as user friendly as I remember and the removable cover is harder to remove and put on. The cover is well made and I expect to get years of service from it. It was a little pricey and maybe I’ll get used to it’s shortcomings.

No one does it better than otterbox , no one really even bothers to do it. My biggest fear was whether otterbox was going to ignore the fact that an Apple Pencil has to charge. Well they didn’t they certainly took it into consideration and delivered a fine product. Quite simply, your iPad Pro is naked without this otterbox. Don’t worry about the pencil, it will charge. Thank you , once again otterbox.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not great The Apple Pencil holder depends on the positioning of the 2 claws. The positioning is fractionally wrong, and the pencil is not held securely. Much more serious is the incorrect positioning of the "shield stand" which is the part that stands the iPad up. As positioned on this one, you cannot use the iPad in the near vertical mode - the "shield stand" is too close to the edge to allow effective positioning of the iPad. These are manufacturing problems. It is an expensive piece of plastic, which does not fulfil my requirements. I can't really use this effectively. I am shopping for an alternative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Protection I’ve only used the Otterbox with my iPad Pro 12.9” (2018) for a few days but have used Otterbox cases on my phones for years. The iPad case fits perfectly and is obviously very well built and extremely protective. I have absolutely no complaints about build, fit, or protection. My only complaint, the same I’ve had with my phone cases, is that the screen protector is not very responsive to touch. It’s very inconsistent in that in some places, it’s fine and in others it’s not. I will be removing mine and having a direct screen protector put on my iPad. Otherwise, the Defender for the 2018 iPad Pro is a great case.

Great Protection for pen and charging, screen protector does not hinder typing or touch sensitivity. BAD, only 2 positions for viewing vertical 90 degrees and 20 degrees. No handle for one hand operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Display stand is terrible I had an iPad Air with the equivalent case and liked it so when I got a pro I ordered the same case, except the built in stand is nearly vertical and doesn’t work well on any surface that isn’t hard and doesn’t move, it’s also a lot harder to type I’m going to have to look for a new case
