NETGEAR Orbi Outdoor WiFi Range Extender (RBS50Y) is rated 3.30 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not fit in my outdoor receptacle! WiFi is pretty good but had to place this indoors because the power cord did not fit into the existing outdoor receptical. I was NOT going to call an electrician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not work with RAX200 router when SmartConnect On I currently use only RAX200 router (AX, OFDMA, MU-MIMO on for all Channels, and this Orbi in Extender mode. I can pair these two and It will work for me for some unpredictable amount of time. But when it drops, it require to manually reset both devices. When I turn off this Orbi and use RAX200 only, I can have stable connections for weeks. But when this Orbi turns on, more than half devices can't load data even they see the signal was strong)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart connect not Smart at all My network map: RAX200 tri-band router + Oribi Outdoor tri-band extender + EAX80 DUAL-band extender. The Orbi Outdoor requires channel > 100 for stable backdoor connection. BUT, When using "SmartConnect", the RAX200 constantly switches between channel 44 and 153 as backdoor channel for Orbi Outdoor ==> Poor connection. The EAX and Oribi Outdoor constantly decides to take output channel of the other as its input channel ==> Two extenders "short-circut" connect to each other without the data transmitted from the RAX200 router ==> Drop connection all the time. There should be a firmware upgrade to make "Smart"connect becomes smart ==> Should have a way to distinguish "Extender" device and have a fixed backdoor channel for them depend on the requirement of the Extender.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn't work Be careful buying this. It doesn't work with the NETGEAR - Orbi AX6000 Tri-band Mesh WiFi 6 System (2-pack). Netgear support told me that the outdoor satellite is still under development for the 6000. It works fine, as far as I understand from support, with less powerful Orbis. Netgear really does need to make this distinction in how it markets the outdoor satellite system. Very dishonest marketing. Instead, I was faced with sitting online for over three hours to hear some dude tell me that it doesn't connect with the 6000. Jesus. Do they think I'm stupid. Had they marketed the device properly, I never would have purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not compatible with any Wifi 6 system I bought this to use with an existing Orbi Wifi Mesh system. It will not work with any Wifi 6 router including Orbi Mesh 6 system. It took me 2 calls to Netgear to get help before the tech noted that it would not work with any Wifi 6 router.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not work with Orbi 6 mesh The rating is based on my desire to use it with an Orbi 6 mesh system. I just bought a RBK 852 System up and Running and bought the AC3000 (RBS50Y as an outdoor satellite for my back yard. FYI, These are not compatable and I am on customer suevice right now returning it. The AC 3000 or RBS50Y does not work with any router.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great as an Extender. The reason I didn't give 5 star was that I got it to be used as a satellite to my RBR850 but it turns out that it won't connect and it's a known issue. After managing to upgrade the firmware I was able to get it connected as an Extender. Its working great but you have no real way of monitoring it without having to get into the Extender itself. It's still worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awful customer service This is a good product, but the customer service is awful. If you misplace a small part, they won't help you once your 90 day warranty is up. Phone support refused to help me after escalating my request internally. I've never seen a less responsive company, particularly when they still are selling the very same product. I'd never buy a Netgear product again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Disappointed ... Wanted it to work I bought this Outdoor Orbi in July to connect as a third satellite on my RBR50 Orbi Mesh. Connected and worked fine for months. Now 5 months later it disconnects, and I cannot seem to get it connected again. It just flashes white and never goes to solid white to sync. Tried factory reset, bringing it in the room with the router and even factory reset the entire mesh. The other two satellites connected fine. Not the Outdoor Orbi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Triple-check compatibility before buying Doesn't work with many Orbi systems, but the instructions/manual don't clarify that. The customer support guy on chat was a jerk about it, too, so I don't have a high opinion of Orbi/Netgear right now. Returned it for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome device. Just don’t get it wet Rocks for performance and distance. Not so great at the outdoor part. I’ve had to move it undercover as I’ve lost two of these devices to water intrusion. My advise is to caulk the top to keep the water out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Form factor needs improvement Functionally, it works great and was easy to add to the Orbi network (I'm using it as a satellite. The only gripe I have is the form factor. It was more designed for setting it outside versus mounting it outside (mounting is possible with the included bracket). I would have liked a more industrial design for wall mounting and an internal power supply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DISAPPOINTED -FALSE INFO - not compatible w/wifi6 I bought this earlier this year along with Orbi Mesh wifi6 for my whole house. I planned to use the outdoor to extend service to our barn. The original webpage said it was compatible with all Orbi mesh but has since been updated to reflect that it is not compatible with the Wifi6. This update came too late. I spend ~$300 for a useless device and at least $1000 of my time trying to get it to work. The initial call with support told me it should work and gave me all the steps I was supposed to take to get it to connect. FAIL. After wasting many hours, a second support call revealed that it will never work! :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Won't work as a satellite on a WiFi 6 Orbi System This is intended to help inform others who are considering the purchase of this outdoor satellite of having trouble joining it to and existing Orbi system. There are a number of support posts regarding problems with this device joining existing Orbi networks as a satellite (as opposed to an extender. I've just spent hours trying to get this to work and on the phone with Netgear support. I have an Orbi RBS850 router and the last tech support person I talked with just informed me there is no way the RBS50Y will work on a WiFi 6 network as a satellite. He indicated the RBS50Y is a WiFi 5 device and could only work as an extender on a WiFi 6 network. Assuming this information is true, then shame on Netgear for not making this crystal clear - the company's website says it works with any Orbi WiFi mesh system and that is not true unless you want it to work in extender mode. I am returning the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Built We had the original Orbi system for several years but this is the first Y model. It is clearly a different animal than the indoor models. It feels bulletproof. I had it up and running in 5 minutes. Now we're just deciding on where to mount it. All in all, a great purchase at a great discounted price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with my Rachio 3 Sprinkler System Controller I bought this extender a few months ago with the intention to use on my lanai for my outdoor TV. Since I just purchased the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 Wi-Fi mesh extender for the family room recently, I decided to use the Orbi in my garage for my RACHIO sprinkler system. This was the best decision that I've made. It was easy to install, and the Wi-Fi range from my garage to the neighbor’s house is well over 300 feet. I highly recommend for purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely poor company description Will not work, as it is incompatible with WiFi 6, even while stating it’ll work with all Orbi routers (a bald face lie! Went to Best Buy to order a new mesh WiFi 6 system to update our lodge, pool and RV area. Bought the AX4200, and this, which states it is compatible with all Orbi systems. That, however, is a bald face lie. It will only work with WiFi 5 and below. It will not work with any WiFi 6 systems. Unmitigated disaster on Netgear’s part! Why would you upgrade to provide WiFi 6 mesh network, and not upgrade your outdoor satellite as well?!?! This has soured me on Netgear, do not buy in intended to use with WiFi 6.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed I have used an Orbi mesh system for a while a my lake house. I decided to add an orbi pro system outdoor orbi to my new barndominium. It has been a struggle. No telling how many hours I’ve spent trying to make it all functional. I’ve spent hours on the phone with tech support also. We would get everything working but then in a few days devices were dropping again. My Sonos system is not working well with it either. I do have a router from my isp but most homes do. I’ve disabled WiFi on my isp router and put my orbi router in ap mode per tech support. It’s a 30x50 area with partial upstairs. I have 3 satellites not counting the orbi outdoor. Should be plenty of coverage but still dropping! The orbi outdoor does not even want to connect. Wish I would have known this would be an issue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Netgear Orbi made WiFI possible I have had a cable internet connection for several years with Time/Warner (now Spectrum). The signal from the Spectrum router was too weak to reach from one end of my house to the other (only 1300 square feet with wooden construction). Even with a LinkSys router, I could not depend on WiFi connections. The Orbi Home Mesh WiFi made wireless connections possible from one end of the house to the other. I just added an outdoor expansion to allow me to monitor my Generac back-up generator through a WiFi app. I needed very helpful Netgear support to complete my installation, but the support was accessible, courteous and knowledgeable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WiFi coverage problem solved! I have a 2300 square foot home on approximately 5 acres with DSL internet service from CenturyLink. I was using the CenturyLink 2082 wireless modem/router and the WiFi signal would not reach into one end of our home. I also needed internet coverage in a metal covered barn located about 150 feet from the house. After researching the different available MESH internet router systems, I choose the Netgear Orbi AC3000 RBK53S with a router and 2 satellites and the Orbi Outdoor Satellite RBS50Y. I had some reservations due to reading some of the reviews detailing installation difficulties and dropped connections between the router and satellites. When I installed the system, I used the Orbi Login online installation method and not the mobile app. I also kept the Orbi router and the 3 satellites close to my computer until everything was set up. I connected the satellite to the CenturyLink 2082 modem with the provided Ethernet cable and turned it on. After startup was complete, I connected my computer to it through WiFi and started the the Orbi LogIn program which detected the Orbi Router. I then powered on 1 of the AC3000 satellites and it synced to the router successfully. I then powered on the 2nd AC 3000 satellite and it did not sync successfully. After 2 more tries by powering it off and then on, it synced successfully. I then checked the firmware versions on the router and the 2 satellites and they were up to date for all units out of the box. I then powered on the Orbi Outdoor satellite. It took 4 tries of powering off and powering on before it booted and I then used the sync function in Orbi Login to sync it to the router. I then checked the firmware version and it needed to be updated. However, the Orbi Login program could not complete the automatic update. I had downloaded the newest firmware to my computer in anticipation of updating the firmware manually and the process was accomplished without incident. I then completed the setup for the Orbi system with the Orbi Login program. At that point, I connected all of our devices to the new Orbi WiFi network and turned off auto-join for the CenturyLink 2082. I then moved the CenturyLink 2082 and the Orbi router to a location as close to the center of our home as possible and powered them on. I then moved the 1st satellite to the far end of the house, powered it on, it synced with the router and displayed a blue light that indicated a strong connection. I then moved the 2nd satellite to the opposite end of the house, which is closest to the barn, powered it on, it synced with the router and displayed a blue light that indicated a strong connection. Lastly, I moved the Orbi Outdoor satellite to the barn knowing that if it was placed outside of the barn it would probably be unable to send a strong signal through the metal the barn is covered with. Instead, I placed it inside the barn next to a door that faces the house and that has a window in it. I powered it on, it synced and displayed a blue light which indicated a strong signal. When I checked the Wifi coverage, I now have a strong signal everywhere in the house and throughout the 48x48 foot barn. To my surprise, I also have a strong signal outside as far away as 250 feet from the house and barn. The WiFi speed has been impressive and much better than the CenturyLink 2082 router. The system was installed a week ago and it has been absolutely reliable with no issues. In short, I am extremely pleased with the Netgear Orbi AC3000 system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Won’t work with WiFi 6 This will not work with any Wifi6 router including the Orbi products. It will not work as a satellite or extender. Now there are more sources saying this on line, but they weren’t there when I bought the product. Returning it now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy set up I have FiOS so I set up my Orbi using the extended mode. Instructions were extremely easy, and it connected to my WiFi immediately. Once connected you will no longer see the Netgear_Ext WiFi link, it will return you to your WiFi settings. Upon connecting you get a message which says you are successfully connected, however when I looked on my phone’s WiFi settings I was expecting to still see the Orbi WiFi settings but it was no longer there, so I thought I was not connected. I was a little confused, so I contacted support who confirmed I was actually connected. I placed the Orbi Satellite on the back of my house and I am now able to receive WiFi in my backyard well over 100’. I hooked up my Ring on my shed and have had service without interruption since. I did notice I am not able to receive WiFi in the front of my house although I don’t really care about that, but it makes me think the Orbi can not transmit through several walls.

Now we can be way out there in the garden and have strong, fast, and reliable WiFi signal, not only for apps and music, but also for safety thru WiFi calling as our wireless providers don’t have strong enough signals in our area and we used to miss may calls. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. Well worth the money. A little more expensive than other extenders out there, but is well worth it. Integrated in with my Linksys router with no issues. Has already been through 100+ degree heat, rain, snow, and 2-degree winter. So, I would say it is weather resistant. Easy mount on the wall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent, but no Ethernet backhaul I bought this on the mistaken assumption that this outdoor extender would have an ethernet backhaul option like the other Orbi satellites that I have. I was mistaken. Only wireless backhaul, which significantly limits placement options. I had even had an ethernet cable run to the intended outdoor location for this unit, only to find out that there's no ethernet port! I strongly suggest that Netgear add an Ethernet port to provide for a consistent experience across Orbi satellites and extenders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Orbi Pro network I purchased the Netgear Orby PRO— router and Wi-Fi mesh was originally two satellites and one main router since then I have upgraded and added two more satellites one for Our barn and one for the shed/pool house. The pool house shed is a bit farther away from any of the other satélites and can fall off link but I found this outdoor unit to put in between and sets under the pergola outback roughly midway between the shed and the house about 120 feet and it connects and allows the back haul data and has not lost signal since. I have about 3.5 acres and I cover it all with wifi. And the air bridges with net gear and the insight management makes it super easy to set up and see what is happening. Even helps you track down people because their watch shows up on which satellite they are closes too. Overall I am super happy with my net gear set up we even purchased a 4 bay net gear NAS for cloud storage

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Install quirk, but works great The setup and startup was easy. Almost too easy. I used all of the auto guided setups and it attached and started working without a problem. I thought, it automatically names itself the same as your network and at that point I could no longer communicate with the unit. So I restarted and did the process manually and named it as an extension, which then worked without a problem. I attached to my starlink network and not an Orbi one that can be managed by Orbi. Other than that it works great. Have about a 200' bubble around my house and shop now
