It states to plug into computer, insert disc and autorun will start, Nothing happens, I go to my PC and click on the drive and it shows it is blank. I need this so that i can print my pictures that I had saved on to discs a few year ago. NOT HAPPY

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrible Unit The unit itself may have worked fine, if it was able to be plugged in. Mini USB cable that came with it fell out almost immediately and would not stay plugged in. There is a plastic layer that makes it so that the power cord does not reach the plug.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a lasting, workable product Got this as a Christmas gift from my parents since the CD-ROM stopped working on my laptop and it was cheaper to get a portable DVD player than to fix my laptop. Started using in in February 2019 and it was GREAT! BUT then in July 2019, only 5 months later, it played a DVD to the middle of the movie then just froze. I could hear the DVD spinning inside but it wouldn't play. I let the player rest and tried the next day. Again, it froze. Took forever to get my DVD to eject. A month later it was working fine, then with another DVD it did the same it had before: played to the middle of a movie and then froze. I still haven't been able to get my DVD out.

It works great and is small enough to stash away in a drawer when I don't need it. I was a little bit leery at first due to how light and flimsy it is, but it does not affect the function of the device in the least. Great buy!

I've wanted to download my music CD's onto a MP3 player and this unit has worked perfectly. The only problem I've encounter with it, it sometimes takes me pushing the open/close button a couple of times before it will open.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Burning discs are brutally slow I purchased this external drive a few days ago and granted the price tag was pretty cheap the drive itself is extremely cheaply made. Burning 1 disc takes close to 8 minutes which is insanely slow compared to my old desktop that was 6 years old with an internal optical drive. This will eventually be a new coaster for my beers after a long days work.

I would also preferred the drive bay opening button to have been on a topside corner. Hard to push the button to open the drive bay door without the whole unit sliding away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you need it I bought this DVD peripheral when replacing my older desktop as I still want the flexibility to use physical media. This works for me, and I have not noticed any real shortcomings due to the slower relative connectivity speed, especially given the cost of similar devices with faster connections. One thing I did notice was excessive spinning noise on the first two discs I ripped, but the drive soon quieted down and has since been unnoticeable when in use. I would definitely recommend and would buy it again.

I guess that it is my loss. I don't recall when or where I bought it, and assume that LG would not replace it under warranty at this point. I will start looking for a new drive from a different manufacturer.

Those of us with large CD collections, who like to make "mix tape" CD-Roms that we can play in our cars, who don't have sophisticated phones, will want to consider an inexpensive but efficient player/writer like this. Dependability remains to be seen, but the unit is simple to install and works well. The manual could be improved, but the value of this unit is clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never got past the user's manual I got as far as viewing the user's manual on the disc that was included with the product and could not eject the disc when I was finished. I had to eject it using the emergency method, which was to power down my computer and insert the end of a paper clip in the hole next to the eject button. Needless to say, this is going back to Best Buy tomorrow and I will not be purchasing another one. (Now I know why it was 50% off!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It might be best for disc storage. I have purchased this both for backing up data that I had stored, and since I had an internal DVD player previously. The store that I purchased it at relayed that I can play my DVD movies on it. However, in order to do that. I have to purchase DVD software from Cyberlink, or use something like hard to find free software, or use an actual DVD player that hooks up to a television instead. This will function more for saving photos, documents, and minor backups. It may work for booting, but I haven't tried it.

LG won't honor the warranty unless I pay to ship it back to them. What kind of disreputable company demands the customer pay for shipping of a defective product?! We then contacted the help desk and was informed that they would have to send us a link to get the actual software. What is the point of that? If your product is so crappy that you can't even include the correct software to make it play a DVD then what the point.

I am a big fan of LG, their products never disappoint. I did my research and picked the DVD player up. The picture and sound are clear and it was not that expensive. If I plug it in (through a USB to USB-C adapter) it clicks and the green light turns on and off forever. It is not recognized by the system at all. Pressing the eject button does not open the tray. Both LG and Apple seem completely uninterested providing ways to fix this problem. This may be Apple's fault, but if LG sells this claiming compatibility they are just as much to blame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light; sturdy; quiet; works great Surprisingly light and sturdy, this LG external CD/DVD reader/writer was just what I needed, when I had to transfer files from my old computer to my new one, the latter of which does not have an optical drive (as is the case with most computers, these days). Even though it comes with a disc pre-loaded with a few programs, I had no trouble using the device without it (attaches via a standard (type A) USB cable). I have read and written text files, images, and videos, both of my own creation and from previous discs, and have checked the written ones on another computer and CD/DVD player with no issues. It is surprisingly quiet, and I appreciate the LED indicator flashing as it processes (when I watch a movie using it, I turn the unit so the LED is away from me to avoid the distraction). FWIW, I selected it for two reasons: It was half-off during a sales period, and because of the LG brand, which I have, happily, used with numerous products over the years. When not in use, I unplug it and store it in its original box.

It worked efficiently & effectively in uploading Microsoft Office Professional to our pc. It does a great job playing cd's also. And it's so small & portable, that it can be connected to my narrow laptop & accompany us on our travels. Highly recommend!

I tried calling LG service. and was on hold for 30 minutes (Burning up my phone minutes, I must note! Who's paying for THAT!??!!?) I tried the website, but it said there was "No support info available for SP80NB80 products". There is a disc with it, but no instructions about how to operate anything after you put the disc in. It said it was taking me to the "CLOUD". wherever that is, and I never got another response out of the thing after that point. It just sat there and did nothing.

I still have tried out all of the different apps that it came with. I tested the playback but have not tested the Media Suite applications. I have never had any problems with LG equipment so I am looking forward to getting to know this new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a piece of junk I bought this on sale at Best Buy. Sorry I ever did. Their store is about an hour away from where I am now, so it's a problem to return it. The media suite they include with it doesn't install right. When it's finally installed, it doesn't play dvds, it just has a little wheel in the corner that goes round and round. Without their program, it also won't play. I have a windows 10 computer. If it can't work on that, why would they even make it? Save yourself some headaches and don't buy this piece of garbage

I contacted customer service and there were of no help. A local Mac repair guy informed me if this issue.

I love the unit, it has not let me down in any respect and will play computer disk and movie disk, which is nice. The unit is easy to install, you just plug it in and you are up and running. As might be expected from an external device, it's a bit noisy as it winds up to read the disc. However, this is not a major drawback.

On line I saw this one and it looked fine. When I got to the store and saw it and how small it was, I was set. It is perfect. Works great, efficiently and is perfect for my use and needs. Rated 5 out of 5 by from External disk drive doesn't work. I wanted a r/w external disk drive on a Dell XPS laptop that I use off line. When I plugged it into the computer, no image appeared. A disk cam with the computer and in Installed it, but still I could not get the disk drive to read a simple DVD. I have not had time to call Dell, but I have found in the past that Dell is not responsive for questions of this type. I expect to have to waste more time trying to get this drive to work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unusable after a couple of months I bought this drive a couple of months ago and now the Cyberlink software will not play a DVD. It worked when I installed it, but now it's requiring that I purchase an upgrade to play DVDs. Quite generously... Cyberlink is offering me 40% off the purchase price for that software, but obviously I will not buy more software for a drive that was supposed to have included it at the time of purchase, so this drive is now a brick on my desk. Completely unusable.

It works just fine, but like most portable devices of this sort, the USB cord is quite short so you need a little table space for it next to your port.

The DVD drive is easy to connect with the enclosed USB cord and recognized by computer via Windows explorer. DVD drive is slim, compact and easy to use . Fast to read, transfer and copy computer files or to watch movies. DVD included with drive contains additional software to print labels, play movies, edit photos and videos.

I'm outside in the weather with my equipment. I burn DVD's of the competition to give the players upon request. This device is fast and performs well in the Michigan cold, humidity, and heat. I would buy this product again. This device is durable and meets my expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Listen to the other 1 star reviews and DO NOT BUY I bought this product today from Best Buy, and I should've read these reviews first. Like so many others, it doesn't work. I have to keep plugging and unplugging it to try to get it to register. 7 times out of 10, nothing happens. The other three times it will work for a few minutes at a time. There's a reason this was the cheapest option. Am returning it tomorrow. Steer clear, spend a bit more money, and buy one that actually works.

One is only a year old. Could not view movies from the disc to TV. This is ambiguous in the sales description, so do not purchase this with movie viewing in mind. Would not even permit movie viewing to my two day old Dell computer! Spend a few dollars more for a true DVR if you want to do anything but file transfer..

I used it twice and it is no longer working. LG’s warranty covers the item for one year. I no longer have the receipt. But the manufacturer label on the back of the unit clearly states “Manufactured July 2020”. Obviously the unit is less than a year old. Yet LG will not replace it without my receipt. Heading out today to buy a beer external CD/DVD drive. It will NOT be another LG unit.

Wound up having to replace that computer and it’s dvd drive initially would not function either. This unit plugged in and went to work immediately. Saved the day for me. I highly recommend this unit.

While I have used computers a lot over the years both for business and private use, I have fairly simple questions for which I needed answers. Now I am learning by the seat of my pants. Some of us need hand holding.

When i hooked it to the smartv to play back media, that too was quick and easy. I would def recommend this to anyone needing a portable drive. Also loved that it didn’t sound a jet taking off when the cooling process was happening. Its quiet, takes minimal space, its a win win!!I received this product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest opinion

My local repair facility and I swapped out the connection cable supplied with the unit with another cable but that failed to fix the problem.

Not impressed with LG or Best Buy

It reads and writes happily, gets along with all my devices, its just a perfect tool when I need an optical drive. Now imagine my surprise looking up the specs, it even supports M-Disc, nice!

I wanted to make copies of the DVD I created but the player will no longer Write/Copy to the player. It only indicates the file is waiting to be written to the disk. Complete garbage. Save your money and purchase another brand.

I have a nice iTunes music collection and I like to create playlists and burn copies to a CD to listen to in my old truck. I was pleased to find this LG drive CD/DVD burner. It's perfect! Reasonably and looks great on my desk. Highly recommended.
