Rated 5 out of 5 by from How to use it I thought this would be a simpler camera to use than my mirrorless camera. I was wrong. I had seen excellent photos from my friend who has tis one. To my surprise, it is full of bells and whistles! I had to call the photo store for help in how to use it and I've been a photographer for well over 50 years....it takes sharp and excellent color photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Problem I bought a camera Canon Power Shot SX 740 HS at Costco a year ago, the camera is not working after I took a few pictures, now the ON/OFF button does not work any more, I am very disappointed about it, I can not find any help from Costco and even usa.canon' customer services. I need help, please. I did not find a serial number on it either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera with awesome shots. Bit of a learning curve Bought this a while ago and have taken some awesome shots with it. The zoom has to be the standout feature with such a compact body. Great for birders, and general photographers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera - had to have another. This is my 2nd SX740 HS as I dropped my original! I've never been so mad at myself! This camera worked so well for me that I had to have another one just like it. Yes, it's not the best one but, for action shots of our farm animals and birds, it's great. The zoom is excellent and was one of the original points that made the sale. You can't go wrong with this camera! Price wise, it's wonderful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera for the price point I've been a Canon customer for years and this camera does not disappoint. If you are new to photography or doing it as a hobby, this isn't the camera for you. If you are a pro, and looking for a nice point and shoot with manual features, this one is it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small and fully capable Using it for several months now. It’s like having my SLR in a pocket. The zoom is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soft, Blurry Photos This camera is an utter disappointment. My father bought the SX260 HS for me years ago and it takes much cleaner more clear photos. I thought this was going to be the perfect upgrade. I can't believe this is a newer version of my old camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its not an Upgrade I still have a SX730HS and did side by side comparisons between it and the SX740HS. It seems like the larger focal range of the lens has created a transition region problem in a zoom region which is a typical focal length for most people and in that range images are really blurry. The SX730HS doesn't have this problem. Changing between image settings on the SX740HS doesn't seem to fix the blurr when it occurs. it could be a bad sensor mounting height in the camera. I sold my SX740HS and also got a complaint from the person that bought it. I'm still looking for an upgrade to my SX730HS with good range. Its terrible that Cannon Cameras that are better don't have much optical zoom or do have have good optical zoom and have bad sensor positions or bad lenses. The SX730HS was the best of both worlds and now it is gone. All I wanted was the SX730HS with the flip screen. I didn't even care about the 4K video! From beyond food range to about 6 feet with zoom this camera is bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy Dandy I wanted a quality camera that I could carry in my pocket. This camera is serving that purpose and providing great photos as expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy, tilt LCD unnecessary This camera seems to work well, so my complaints are minor. It's heavy, I would have liked more interesting colors, and the tilt LCD is a total waste (and adds weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4k video & 40x optical zoom Takes great pics & vids, Bluetooth & Wifi setup a little involved, no internal gps for location metadata unless you use a nearby cellphone bluetooth connection to provide the gps location to the camera. Canon Android app to transfer pics & vids to phone works smoothly over Wifi (not BT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waste of money I purchased two of this camera, both of them were honestly terrible and had poor video and audio performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Guess I'm a slow learner My wife and I each got an SX740 before a trip to VietNam last November. After about 2,000 pictures I dropped mine causing little damage and it continued to work another 4,000 pictures. Then early this year in Costa Rica (and another 1,000 + pictures my 740 suddenly developed a problem: the view screen was only on the top half of the screen with white on the bottom half, the camera wouldn’t take a picture, and when turned off the lens would only retract half way (and had to be pushed in with a snap). I figured it was finally resulting from the drop in VietNam. Between that trip and the next to South America I purchased another SX740 because I liked the small size and image quality with 40x optical zoom. My new 740 lasted about 2,000 pictures in Brazil when it developed the exact same symptoms. A few days later my wife’s (after about 3,000 pictures overall – she doesn’t take as many as I do) developed the EXACT SAME problem. After we got over the THREE FOR THREE anger she discovered while playing with hers that the problem only happened in ‘Auto’ mode. When in ‘Food’ or ‘Sport’ modes the cameras worked normally. We finished the trip using only those modes. Now, I’m looking for some answers so I don’t have to buy yet another two cameras (they won’t be Canon SX740’s next time) for our upcoming trip to Italy. ANY THOUGHTS???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality photos, zoom capability, video and more!! I bought this a few weeks ago as a Christmas gift for my wife. She absolutely loves it. She hasn’t put it down long since she got it. I would be happy to add photos if I could get my hands on it. Lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Features not as advertised on this webpage I was very disappointed when my new Canon xs740 HS arrived to find that it in fact does not have the feature Sepia. The specifications on the website state that it does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bad 4k Good Sound and Image Stabilization The image stabilization the sound recording are good on this camera. The 4k is horrible. Its cropped in and if you're not in the sun the image quality is grainy muddy soft just horrible. Extremely disappointed. It's made well looks nice but it's just a waste. Canon takes 2 steps forward then takes 2 steps back. They seem to only care about their expensive pro cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The good and the other. I was unhappy with some aspects of my recently purchased G7x Mark II and decided to buy this camera. I have taken several hundred images with it so far. There are some good things about it operationally that make it easier to use than the quirky, sometimes uncooperative G7x. Calling this lens "superb" is a stretch. I realize that big zooms involve trade offs so my findings are not that surprising I guess but I was hoping for better. Image quality shows less sharpness and lower contrast than the G7x by far. For internet images it's OK but for big prints it can't be that good. G7x Mark II when you can get it to behave makes super sharp images. You just can't win.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I wanted I bought the Canon PowerShox SX740 a few weeks ago mainly for Vlog-related uses. The quality of picture and audio is amazing. The flip-up screen is very helpful. Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as good as SX720HS I ordered this direct from Canon at the end of December, and took a few test shots around the house. When I do nature travel, I take my 70D DSLR, and since my husband needed a replacement camera, and he doesn't take many pics, I gave him my SX 720 HS, which was a great camera, and bought this as a replacement. I wanted another small camera for our trip to South East Asia, from which we have just returned, so I bought this. Big mistake. I wear prescription polarized sunglasses. Canon usually coats its lenses on compacts such that if you are doing a vertical shot, you cannot see it on the camera with your polarized glasses on. That is, until this one. I prefer my photo compositions, for the most part, in the landscape/ horizontal mode. I was shocked to find my images invisible in this mode on this camera, and could not get my glasses off fast enough to get the shot I was after. Because of this, I used my iPhone as my main camera for this trip. I called up Tech Support today, and was told that since I bought this camera direct from Canon, I only had 14 days to return it. I call that poor customer service. If you normally wear polarized su

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Some Unusual Features One of the main reasons that I bought this camera was its Manual Focus feature. Unfortunately I have not yet figured-out how to effectively use the Manual Focus. With my limited experience with the camera, I usually give-up on Manual Focus and let the camera do the focusing. BUT the focal point is often not what I want. Also I also usually lock the aperture at f-8 in order to try to get best depth-of field. It is easy to lock the f-stop; this a handy feature. So far I have used a tripod all photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not recommended Bought in Dec. Wanted something light to carry, it is lightweight. That is the only good thing about it. I have had and still have a lot of canon cameras that are great, but this one is aweful, pics are noisy, muddy, fuzzy. If I were canon I would be ashamed to put this camera on market, it is worthless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Camera for the money! I bought this camera to upgrade from my SX710HS. It is a definite improvement. I actually have this camera for it's zoom and carry a G7X MarkII as my primary camera. So with both I have good coverage from Macro to Long Distance. Also this camera has the new Digic 8 sensor in it that makes a big difference. This camera works well in low light but is not at it's best. Well lighted or sunlight conditions is where it excels. The "Zoom" on this camera is excellent and that is what I bought it for. A plus is the macro and movie modes. I wish a software update could be had for a multi frame focus (Face + Tracking like the G7X MarkII. But that might be asking a bit much or I need to look further into the cameras adjustments for this. Right now I have it on the exact same focus adjustment as my Canon but I only get a single point focus and it is random on the screen. Overall this is a very good point and shoot camera. All the shooting modes have their place and work well. I tried to supply as many pics as I could to cover the cameras ability (Limited to six).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of features to remember The 40x zoom is great. However, many times when focusing on infinity, the camera cannot find it and you must focus manually to obtain infinity. Have had some shots come out soft when forgetting to check for correct infinity focus. When video is used, there is a moment of blurring when actively zooming in or out. Not acceptable even for that instant. Kind of ruins clean crisp focus otherwise. When changing zoom power always focus in the zoom mode AND shut off auto focus. I forgot to shut off auto focus a few times and have nice crisp zoomed in shots when videoing but then when zooming out, the auto focus chose something in the foreground and left my main subject soft again. Also I had to get used to a separate button to start videoing whereas my older Canon cameras used the same shutter button to start video. Missed a few video shots due to this. Shot 2 full 128 memory cards of video and am getting used to all this but it takes PRACTICE! Also, the camera does not reset to a "normal" mode. If you use the timer, it will stay on timer until you switch back. More practice. The one feature I really like is the "oil paint" mode. Makes everything almost surreal without external editing. Just a little disappointed in my "once in a life time" first use results, but then I should have spent more time practicing....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great zoom and image stabilization I received the first batch of the new SX740 this week and am amazed so far. The 40x zoom and image stabilization make for incredible hand held photos. The hi-speed multi-shot mode at 10 frames per second at full resolution means you always get the best high-speed action photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding pictures with an amazing zoom! I bought this camera to use traveling because of it compact size and amazing zoom! Canon hit a home run with the SX740 HS. High quality pictures with an amazing zoom. It's very easy to setup the WiFi and Bluetooth. It allows you to quickly send pictures directly to your phone to forward on or to your computer/printer. The camera is very easy to use and the Optical Image Stabilizer really helps produce sharp pictures. Extremely helpful for unsteady people like me. I just love the 4K movie quality from this camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive little camera 740HS I used to carry a Gopro everywhere but found I needed something with a zoom to get more than just a wide shot. I read all the reviews on this camera and bought it and was pleasantly surprised. The picture quality is great and the menu easy to follow. Although the focus is a bit slow, this is after all a pocket camera and gets me the shots I wanted. It allows me to shoot in manual also and that is perfect for me. For its price and size, I think it’s a good deal. If you are looking for more, you will pay more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compact zoom, but lens cover sticks I've enjoyed this camera for birding, but am on my second camera and the lens cover started stickling open after a few months so I have to close it manually each time. Seems like a defect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great zoom but it doesn't do the basics I bought this camera a year ago and I have been trying to play around with it changing the settings because I thought the problem with the photos not being sharp was solvable but it isn't. The only good if not amazing thing is the zoom, that's it. Not recommended at all as you are 100% better off with your phone.
