Compact and lightweight-an outstanding walk-around lens-Canon's EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM is a great entry into the world of EOS prime lenses. With an 80 mm effective focal-length on APS-C cameras, 50 mm on full-frame cameras, it's an excellent prime lens for portraits, action, even nighttime photography. Its bright maximum aperture of f/1.8 helps it not only to excel in low light, but also to capture gorgeous, sharp images and movies with beautiful background blur thanks to its circular 7-blade design. An updated lens arrangement with new lens coatings helps render images with excellent color balance, plus minimized ghosting and flare. Performance is brilliant, with a stepping motor (gear-type STM) to deliver near silent, continuous Movie Servo AF for movies plus speedy, smooth AF for stills. A redesigned exterior with improved focus ring placement makes manual focus adjustments a breeze. Canon's most compact 50 mm lens, the EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM has a rugged metal mount, plus an improved minimum focusing distance of 1.15 ft. (0.35m) and a maximum magnification of 0.21x. Offering sharp performance for the best in movies and stills, it's a fixed focal length gem-the perfect lens for photographers and moviemakers to expand the creative possibilities with their EOS cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best for beginners I was provided a camera to mess around and practice with, which came with 2 lenses. i loved it. But something was missing. I was told i need a nifty fifty. So i did some research and came to this lense. I saw the reviews and thought ok i need to get this and try it. for the price it was reasonable. Since ive had it, My portrait shots are sooo much better. its not great for movement, but when captured it is absolutely great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pros and Cons to this lens While this lens can produce some amazing photos that are super sharp, the downside is this lens has horrible chromatic aberration. But it's a really great bang for you buck and if you can work around that, it's a good little lens to have. I personally have troubles with the focus. It doesn't like to use the face tracking with my EOS R but when everything works, it works really really great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Canon lens- highly recommend Exactly captures the kind of images I was looking for. Also it is a nice, very lightweight lens, which is always appreciated

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little tank! I preordered this the night before release and got it the very next day. Ever since I've put it on my 6D, it hasn't come off. I haven't shot at any aperture less than 2.8 and this thing is SHARP wide open. With it's combined sharpness and very nice bokeh, it certainly gives your subjects (in my case, people (portraits)) a 3D look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Budget friendly with superb quality As a hobbyist, I was looking for a prime lens that was budget friendly but still offered good quality. I saw this refurbished option directly coming from Canon am very pleased with my purchase. There are no signs of use and it looks and works like a brand new lens. Although people may knock this lens for its lighter build, I can appreciate it's lighter weight as I never hesitate to bring this lens out with me and I don't feel like I have to baby it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! I'm a rookie photographer, but I can still take some great pics and I have. I have been watching for products to come out and this was one of the newest that is a great price! Little skeptical I do my research and there wasn't anything about how well this was going to be just what the previous version did and the hopeful upgrades. Well I got it today and took a few pics with it in different settings and it was amazing. AF was super smooth, and the addition of the metal mount makes it fit perfect and very sturdy. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get some great shots out of a cheaper lens but one that still has great quality! Shipped over night was perfect!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a pro! Ok. I bought an m50 a month ago. Not bad! I upgraded from a Nikon d3200 with kit lenses. I never felt like I was able to get that "wow" picture. Well the m50 didn't do that with the kit lens. So instead of spending more money on a "bigger better" camera I did some research. Surprised to find out that the lens makes the camera. Not the other way around. So I bought the 50mm 1.8 and a speed booster. My first shot was absolutely stunning and creamy I'm going to go to a full sensor camera one day so I'll prob just keep using speed booster and buying ef mount lenses until I do. I don't see why I would put money into m mounts anymore.

It is very versatile, works well for landscapes, portraits, etc. Every picture I take with it is sharp, it focuses well both manually and with auto focus. Auto focus is fast. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The one to get .... Canon 50 mm lens Sharper than f/1.4, better built than older nifty fifty, which was sharp but had atrociously crummy build quality. Priced about the same. STM motor allows for smoother video. A must have in everyone's bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Fifty ! I just bought this lens for my Canon APS-C T5i DSLR , which actually makes it an 80mm lens . It's optics are comparable to my old Rokkor 85mm f 1.7 , which is saying a lot , considering the fact that Rokkor built lenses for Leica !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Purchase I bought this almost a month ago and I am so happy that I did! It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The 50 mm blurs backgrounds so well and I have been having fun taking pictures with it. It was the perfect addition to my lens collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome After testing this lens, I'm really happy with its performance. I used a Canon f1.4 USM for a long time, I decided to upgrade with this one. The optical quality of this new 1.8 STM is a little better than the 1.4 USM. It is very sharp, with beautiful contrast and not flare in backlighting situations. The background blur is wonderful! The auto focus is simply perfect! I like a lot the metal mount that it has. Lightweight. The finish of this lens is very attractive. Bought with the Canon lens hood, which is highly recomended, nice quality! If you are thinking to buy a 50 mm from Canon, it is the glass! The price is a bargain!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Little Engine That Could! Small enough to get lost in your camera bag. powerful enough to make sure it doesn't - The lens meets, and in some cases exceeds the manufacturer's specifications. Mounted on a 7D, it produced sharp images as close as ten inches from the subject (lists 1.15 feet as the minimum), and has little to no visible distortion when shooting at approx twenty feet (I shot a barn door with vertical, diagonal, and horizontal boarding, then put the image into the lens correction filter on Photoshop with the grid displayed to determine how accurate it was) - overall, it looks to be a great addition to your arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Canon Homerun! I use my Canon 50 1.8 STM on my 70D and love it! The bokeh or blur effect is VERY good, build quality is excellent, and the STM focusing motor is super with the 70D's video. The price point makes this a great value! I highly recommend this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good images and price, but loud focusing. Came today and put it in on my C100 immediately noticed the loud focus movement, like a squeaking sound. If this is normal can't recommend it for video. It would even be annoying to hear it during photography. The description says "near silent" but it is no where near silent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Prime Lens I received this as a Christmas gift. I don't own a lot of lenses yet, so far I am in love! This is my first lens that can get down to an aperture below a 3.5. The bokeh a is great and it's useful in low light situations. definitely worth the purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome lens This lens is great. I bought it for its price snd so I had something easier to walk around with. This lens doesn't disappoint. The only downside is the AF motor is a little loud. I've never thought it was a problem, and certainly not enough to take away any of the 5 stars it deserves. Images are clear. color is vibrant. I use this lens all the time. Do yourself a favor and pick this up. How can you beat the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for great price I bought the lense as part of the kit a week ago great buy for the apc-s photographers and after using it over easter weekend i had blast. The 10-18 is good for action and parties for the great wide angles it can produce. However the EF 50 to simply put it ,a bargain price for a low light bokeh beast! Very sharp lense! Canon may have out-done themselves on this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly High Quality I recently bought the Canon 5d Mark IV body and was looking for a cheap full-frame lens to pair with it. When I found this one I didn't have the highest expectations because of the price, but it has blown me away in terms of focusing nuance and sharpness. It's very quiet when it auto focuses and it is very exact. Be aware this lens does not have zoom capabilities. I personally am very happy with this lens in terms of quality vs. price, and I think it takes a higher quality photo than other more expensive lenses I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stating the Obvious again...Must Have Whether crop or full frame, you can't lose with this lens. It rivals many L lenses in Sharpness and the STM is a life saver when you're doing video but don't want the noise of previous AF Motors over bearing the audio capture even if you have an external mic. I prefer this over the 50mm 1.4 not only becasue its lighter but 2 of the 5 that i've owned, the AF of the 50mm 1.4 stopped working after about a year and that was very disappointing. Versus previous 50mm 1.8 II, the AF of the II is faster but again, the AF noise, plastic mount and no manual focus override of the II is a nuisance. Hands down, the 50mm 1.8 STM is a must have winner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well, although noisy The refurbished 50mm I purchased works well. So far, it takes great pictures! I did notice today, when using the manual focus, that it's quite loud when focusing, unlike my other Canon lenses. This concerns me as I intend to use it for video projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Favorite Lens I have a passion for crisp- clear photos but am on a budget. This lens on my t4i makes it easy to get the shot I want. I am spending much less time post-processing; I find little to no distortion or chromatic aberration wide open. I get the crisp- clear look I'm reaching for with this lens. The colors are vibrant right out of the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect beginner lens This was my first lens purchase apart from my kit lens! I used it with the Canon EOS M50 with an adapter and the photos are amazing!! Really awesome for that bokeh effect. My camera has a crop censor so it makes my composition harder to shoot (especially people so I lose some of the intense bokeh effect I want but nonetheless, an awesome lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great First Prime, but a little loud... Great First Prime Lens. Having a wide aperture really opens up many more possibilities in shooting. The stepper motor is louder than I personally think it should be (the 40mm f/2.8 is much quieter, but functions well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nifty Fifty Best little lens ever! My very first lens I purchased over 6 yrs ago, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Still use it. I wouldn’t even purchase the L lens because I love the way my photos come out with this lens. Who would have thought that something that looks delicate would work so well? Money well spent

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the great deal!!! My family and I were planning our vacation and I wanted a light weight lens. Something that would be good for snapshots. Something quick and easy to use. Something that would work in all light conditions. Then, Canon sent me this special offer on the 50mm 1.8 STM lens. I ordered immediately. I could not be happier with this investment. The picture quality, light weight, handling in low light situations...I am absolutely blown away!!! Thank you, Canon!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nifty Fifty This lens is a seriously great lens. One of the cheapest lenses sold by Canon and the images are still spectacular!! I've heard it called the Nifty Fifty and even preferred over the 50mm f/1.4, I couldn't agree more. An amazing bargain for the images produced, non-professionals couldn't want more from a fast prime lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does not provide touted STM features This lens doesnt function as an STM lens on my canon C-100 MK2, even thought it is labeled STM. I can't choose an off-center face to focus on like I can with my 18-135 STM. This is a disaster for interviews when subject is in right or left third of frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Lens, Bad Packaging Great versatile lens, great for shooting in lower light. Great to have with a larger zoom lens as a pair. However, SO MUCH PLASTIC came in the box. The box itself was way bigger than necessary, and filled with all sorts of bubble wraps (one of which was literally 5 ft long, casings, plastic bags, and bits that make you feel like you're literally killing a whale by wanting to do photography. Please Canon, we love your products, but it's tough for us environmentally conscious folks to legitimize supporting companies that are so excessively wasteful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Focusing is too loud! Canon's claim - "Performance is brilliant, with a stepping motor (gear-type STM) to deliver near silent, continuous Movie Servo AF for movies". I found the focusing to be loud (could be hear from 10ft away on the first 2 lenses and 6ft away on the 3rd), making this lens unusable with the Canon 70D built in mic. My other STM lens is silent. This lens is louder than my non STM 50mm/1.8 lens and louder than my USM and L series lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from STM that's LOUD It's an STM lens, but there's nothing silent in it. I can hear it focusing (hunting in the other room, behind closed door. The reason I bought it - aside the 1.8 - is that the ad says it's an STM lens and expected to be (near) silent. For comparison I have STM, L lenses, some cheaper lenses (including 3rd party) and none is this LOUD. Aside that, it's an ok lens. Not that sharp at 1.8, but can live w it and for the price can't complain, however if Canon advertises it as near silent than - unless it's faulty - I expect near silent... If it would be quieter (not even silent like other STMs) I would love to keep it, as it could be a great walk around portrait, low light, light travel lens.. The only way I could submit this if I allowed DATA COLLECTION FOR THIS SITE! It was complaining about an adblocker but that's not the issue..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Capable Lens I was surprised when I started taking pictures with the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. The lens is comparably inexpensive and I didn't expect high quality photos but I that's exactly what I got. This lens is an ideal walk around lens because it's small, light, simple and very effective. I think it works best on a full frame camera because you get the actual 50mm as opposed to a cropped sensor camera where you would get an effective 80mm - but sometimes you may want that too. I have heard this lens referred to as the "Nifty 50" and now I know why. I'm very happy with my purchase. Thank you Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lens This 50mm lens produces some quality photos. While not as fast as the f/1.4 it is less than half he price. And the f/1.2L is 10 times the cost. It seems at times it has to hunt for focus a bit (but that could just be a contrast thing with my subject and background too) When everything is right focus is quick and accurate. It produces some beautiful bokeh. My images have been clear and sharp so far. I love it. One thing Canon is good at... producing great lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The New Nifty Fifty is even Niftier than Before! Well they've long said the Nifty Fifty should be one of your first lens purchases. I wish I had listened. The best $Value lens you'll have in your bag. Great Portraits, Excellent low light, Perfect Video. The Autofocus is a tad noisy, but it focuses so fast you'll hardly notice it. I generally use an external mic so not a big deal, especially not at this price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, loud focus ring and tight connection I needed a camera with a large aperture for practicing photography in dark city scenes. This works great at f/1.8, and the bokeh looks great. When the lens focuses, either automatically or manually, it's quite loud. I read that in some other reviews too, and they were quite serious. I thought "it can't be that bad", but it's quite noticeable. Both the lens I tried at the store and the lens I walked home with have really rough threads. What I mean by that is when twisting it onto my T7, it feels like I'm cross-threading it; it just doesn't feel right. It still works every time, but my 18-55, 70-300, and 35 macro twist on with ease. I'm not sure if I'm unlucky with the two 50s I put on my camera, or if there was some kind of manufacturing defect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The cheapest but yet the best The nifty fifty is the one of the most popular lens on the market. It is also one of the cheapest and yet, the quality is here. It provides sharp photo with a crazy bokeh at low aperture. I use it for astrophotography too and results are great. Just be careful around f/1.8-2, chromatic aberration and coma appear on the edges (in very low light conditions like astrophotography, but nothing to be concerned if you center well your object.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, meh AF I really like the results I get with this lens...when it focuses. It seems to have a hard time finding focus with AF and the focus ring doesn't directly drive the focus in MF, so that's a bit fiddly and delayed. I have missed some great shots because of focusing issues of the lens. Maybe a learning curve, maybe I got a dud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great IQ. Incredible Value. Mediocre Focusing. Canon's latest Nifty Fifty does not disappoint. The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM should be in everyone amateur photographer's bag. This was the least expensive lens I've purchased, yet I always reach for it when high image quality and good bokeh is what I'm seeking. I'm incredibly happy with this lens when used for portraits, and when low lighting is a challenge. I believe this was Canon's third prime lens with the newer STM focusing system, so I would have expected that the 40mm and then the 24mm 2.8 pancake lens would have been a good way to learn how to do quick focusing. I do find that my older STM lenses, such as the 24mm f2.8 STM (not the 40mm f/2.8 STM which seems clunkier), and the two kit lenses released in 2013 (18-55 STM and 55-250 STM) and the 10-18 STM are all quicker and quieter at focusing than the STM Nifty Fifty. Furthermore, and perhaps I'm just spoiled, but the two (at this time) lenses using nano USM are even quicker (focusing) than the STM lenses and substantially quieter than the 50mm. It is also not built quite as well as most of the recent EF-S lenses, but I'm not docking it for that. The imaging elements on the inside are still stellar, so who really cares how robust it "feels"? This 50mm at 1.8 is an incredible value for the clarity and maximum aperture it offers. I do use it frequently. I just don't prefer it for video. The volume of the sound made when focusing isn't the deal breaker for me since I use a shotgun or lavlier mic, but the searching for focus, which is admittedly partially due to the camera itself, is not good enough for video. I cannot imagine this lens getting replaced/upgraded anytime soon, and it is sure not to drop in price much more than the already rock-bottom value. If you have a medium kit zoom and a long kit zoom lens, this latest STM version of the f/1.8 Nifty Fifty deserves a spot in your camera bag, and should definitely be on your camera when it comes to inexpensive but quality portraiture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Value! This lens is amazing for the price. Autofocus is super fast and images are sharp with great bokeh. The only real limitation I’ve run into is its narrow angle of view, but I suppose that’s the trade off for the price. Other than that I have been very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens I was initially skeptical about this because it was refurbished, but it works absolutely perfectly. It is a fantastic lens that should definitely be in any photographer's kit. The auto focus is fast and accurate and you can get some great low-light shots with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have lens for any shooter I just bought this lens a week ago for my 6D and I've been using it for some portraits and low light situations and I love it. I went with this model because I didn't like the cheap feel of the original 50mm lens. Its definitely built a lot better than the original. Although the optics seem unchanged from the original and image quality is about the same, its still the best for your buck. FYI, at f/1.8 its not as sharp as I would've wished it would be, definitely sharpest at f/2.8. If you want a great 50mm lens with great build quality, silent AF, and great image quality, I'd definitely recommend this to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beware of defects I think Canon 50mm 1,8 is a legendary lens for people like me; a student on a budget, so my poor rating is not related to the quality of this lens. However, Canon USA really disappointed me as I purchased one 50mm in June and took a few test photos and kept it in the original box for a month. After a month when I started to actually use the lens, and after a few photos and videos I recognized how loud and slow-zoom the lens is compared to my kit lens. I contacted Canon for replacement of repair and they are telling me to ship the lens to Canon. The shipping price is $20-30 for a lens which costs $100. So I am left to pay 20-30 percent of my purchase price to ship the item which has been defective in the first month of use. I contacted Canon to see if they accept to replace or pay the shipping and they are not ready to do so. I did not want to spend one third of the price, so all my videos are having the loud noise now with slow autofocus. So, I always suggest 50mm lenses to my friends but should say "beware of Canon USA defective Items as you should pay a big shipping money to get it fixed and the repair service is poor without shipment. Otherwise, you will feel kind of disappointed with Canon USA for sending out defective items and not being ready to compensate for their flaws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Packs a Punch for the Price! Listen. Buy this lens. It is so cheap compared to the other Canon lens and you can get stunning pictures with it. Stunning. At the price point and for what you can achieve with this lens, I would highly recommend adding this to your camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Affordable, fast, fun! Everybody knows about the nifty fifty! It's a wonderfully small prime lens that has a fast aperture for a cheap price. The STM variant does seems quite a bit better from the previous version. I have used this lens on my Canon T3, T5i, and now my R8. It works perfectly for portraits or if you need more light in darker situations. It is softer at f/1.8, but sharpens up around f/2.8, which is still perfectly usable. It's a little tight on crop though, but I felt it was was easier to use on full frame for more everyday situations. I'm mostly planning on switching to the RF 35mm, but the 50mm is still an invaluable tool to have in most photographer's and even videographer's bag.
