Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent Compact Printer w/ a Few Flaws Overall this is a nice printer but w/ a few complaints. The paper feed area is a little too sensitive. Does'nt always pick up the paper unless it is pushed all the way down into the feeder slot. Very annoying, I had a Toshiba scanner before purchasing this Brother that worked much better @ sensing the contact w/ the paper. Also, for whatever reason the sleep feature does't always activate to ON status when I launch the app. It takes forever to come back online and sometimes it never's does forcing a complete reset of the on/off process. The black/white scanning feature could also be improved. Cant seem to find a good balance between a legable scan & file size. Finally, my biggest complaint. The feeder almost always slightly skews the paper when feeding. If the paper is not stacked perfectly straight it will skew your scan. Again, my Toshiba had a auto-correct feature that took the slight mis-skew's out of the scan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and Reliable Products. Brother has made some quality products over the years. My first experience with Brother products was a type writer back in 1985. I continue to purchase products from Brothers because they are quality products that stand the test of time. That said this is not the first Brother Scanner that I own. The first was purchased about 6 years ago and operates well. I actually carry it in my car along with my laptop. Model DS-920. Now for the current purchase of the Brother Scanner ADS-1700W. Scans perfectly, good quality as expected. First off if you turn it off it looses wifi settings (password. Second fault is the receipt app does not work so well with long receipts. If scanning small purchases like gas and oil it is fine. Fast food and diner receipts equally well. Big Walmart purchase not so well. It will scan business cards and credit cards or digital access cards very nicely. It also works equally well with standard paper or legal size documents.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product jams with carrier sheet This scanner worked great until I tried using the ADS carrier sheet. Some scans are odd sizes and require the plastic carrier sheet. This scanner jammed every time so I had to upgrade to the ADS2800W. The 2800 has a setting in the software to allow the carrier sheet and it works great. It really would have been nice if the 1700 allowed carrier sheets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Compatible with Mac OS Ventura Unfortunately I had to return this item, I have a Mac and this scanner is not compatible with my Mac OS, there was no mention of this when I purchased the scanner & I was disappointed that I was unable to make it work, I was looking for a small scanner that would sit on my desktop without taking up much space and this one seemed to fit the bill, after an hour on line with support I packed it up and returned it.

Scans color as well as B&W with multiple convenient options for where to send the scanned document wirelessly. Creates one PDF file from all pages scanned in. Best scanner I ever owned!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The mechanics work This scanner works. Physically feeding paper through the scanner is easy, and it feels durable, although I’ve only had it a few months at this point. The app works great. It’s actually the only way I’m able to use this scanner with ease. I tried connecting the scanner to my pc via usb but my computer did not like it and failed to recognize the device. I’m sure there’s a way to fix this, but I haven’t gotten around to it. Probably won’t. I just deal with the extra step of going through the app and sending files to my cloud service.

It is more dependable, as far as holding its connection, than my larger, more expensive, Fujitsu scanners. I purchased it to use in travel: in my motorhome, client offices and even in my car. Item: Brother ADS-1700w Compact Desktop Wireless ScannerFunctionality: The purpose of this item is to provide high-quality black and white and/or color scanning of loose documents (since it is a scanner that requires putting documents fully through the machine, rather than a flatbed), with wireless functionality and duplexing capability. It performs these tasks well, but I have significant reservations, outlined below.Appearance/First impressions: Frankly, this scanner is adorable. It weighs a fair bit for its size, but nothing I would consider unmanageable, and it looks so friendly! It`s absolutely portable, which is important for someone who travels as much as I do, but it also looks and feels solid in a desktop environment.Setup: The setup instructions provided through the software did not match the actual actions necessary to set up the scanner, and the software froze during setup; nonetheless, I found configuration to be reasonably intuitive. (I was somewhat alarmed to see the poor rating the software had on the Mac App Store, but so far I have not had any issues with it.)One small quibble: I found the "date/time" setting mechanism to be highly unintuitive; I spent a couple minutes mashing buttons wondering why nothing was happening before I realized I had to deliberately delete the incorrect time information before inputting accurate information.Scan quality: Scans are crisp and sharp, and color scans are BEAUTIFUL. Artifacts in the scan are rare and the double-sided functionality is truly impressive. I LOVE how fast the scanner is, and the options presented to me by the software (save, email, compile a document, etc) are intuitive and useful. Drawbacks: Whenever any document of a nonstandard size is inserted, it skews badly to one side or the other as it rolls through no matter how the plastic tabs on the machine are adjusted, or how carefully the settings on the computer software are altered. If I were to need to email or post online something that had been scanned, it would require careful editing in a separate program so it would appear straight, since changing the angle by degrees is not a function the Brother software seems to have. Perhaps this is user error, and as I get used to the scanner I will learn how to keep documents from sliding out of place as they go through, but for now it is a significant impediment to this scanner being actually useful to me. My old flatbed scanner is enormously unwieldy and can`t travel with me, which I hate, but at least I don`t have to spend tons of time editing the images it puts out.Overall: I like this scanner enough to want to keep using it, but since the "tracking" issues with documents could have been easily fixed with the addition of some additional or more adjustable plastic grooves like the ones high-powered printers have, I find myself a little disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact Design Easy Set Up The setup was easy and love the compact design. When it is folded up, it can fit nicely behind my desktop. The image is clear and the resolution is great using the default 300dpi mode. Fast scanning. However, it can jam easily when I try to scan lots of wrinkled gas station receipts at once. And they tend to turn to an angle and don't go straight. But it is just a receipt so that's not that important. As long as it gives me quick and clean scan with the letter size paper, I am satisfied with it.

Overall: This is a lightweight and fast compact scanner. Once the initial setup was completed I was able to scan photos, bills, and statements. This is a great scanner for someone who is tech savvy.Pros: The scanner is able to do one-sided and double-sided scanning. An excellent feature is the OCR capability. Shortcuts can be set up specifying the scan resolution, black/color/gray scale, and location where the file will be stored on the PC.Cons: Setup requires some technical know how. Use of the online manual is necessary. In order to connect the laptop and computer, one needs a USB (micro which is not included. Web based management and knowledge of the scanner`s IP address and server provider`s settings for email setup is needed. Photos scanned initially had many streaks; I had to refer to the online manual and clean the glass strips in the scanner multiple times. Even though I was able to do a workflow scan from the computer to the scanner, I was unable to perform a workflow scan from the scanner. It would be nice if you could name your scan files; filenames are automatically generated. Although the scanner is compact, it cannot be set too close to a desk or table edge or the pages it scans will fall to the floor. It cannot scan newspapers articles well since the ink bleeds through the image and the bleed through setting does not work well on newspapers.

I received this scanner and removing it from the packaging was very simple. You just take it out of the box and plug it in. It`s compact size and would be easy to transport if needed from office to office. Took me a few minutes to get the settings correct and understanding the buttons but after that it is quite simple to use. I tested it out by scanning a previously crumpled paper and it fed through easily. As well as I scanned in a 12 page report and all the fonts and colors were captured perfectly. I would definitely recommend this for the average person with scanning needs. Not sure how it would hold up with large continuous portions. My favorite part is the size of it. Doesn`t take up much space at all and has a decent design.

When I got the scanner in the mail, I was surprised at how small and compact it was. But size doesn`t matter when it comes to this scanner. It was super easy to set up and connect to, even to your phone and simple instructions. I scanned in my children`s birth certificates and it scanned them in so precise and clear that if I printed them it may look like the original. It is really fast once scanning. I really also like the touch screen. I think it being so small is great because you can easily store it without it looking bulky and taking up space. The only thing I`d be worried about is dropping it and breaking it since its so small, but for the most part it seems sturdy enough. If you are trying to go paperless as possible, this scanner is the perfect solution for that.

What a great, affordable and convenient product! I love the compact design and ease of setting up! We live in a WiFi era and this product is a great addition to my technology family!! It is portable, light and compact and can be moved/placed or taken anywhere!! I love that you can download an app and scan directly to your phone and send it via email, text or save it as a Jpeg or pdf. Use can also scan directly to the computer or to a usb drive and use it in the go! I also found it very convenient that it scans 2 sided without having to manually flip the pages rather scans both sides at once! Genius!It scans really fast and compared to other scanners on the market it is more affordable. For me personally i do not have the need of scanning credit card/business card/insurance cards. However, I tested this out they the card feeder and it was slower and had to manually insert them one by one. If I was in need of scanning numerous cards daily i might reconsider a scanner that can do multiple and feed automatically, not sure if there even is one on the market that does something like this. Overall, it is a great product and will definitely recommend.

I was extremely excited to receive the scanner and could not wait to set it up. Downloading the software was relatively easy. It took some time to connect to my wifi, but that was eventually done. The scanner comes with settings which were a little confusing. The main issue I had was scanning multiple pages. If I tried to scan a three page document, it saved on my computer as three separate documents instead of one document with three pages. I contacted customer support through their chat and they advised me to try download the software again and they send more detailed instructions. This did not help. I then called their help desk and I was advised to change the document from a JPEG to a PDF. This worked and the scanner worked like a charm. I love how quickly it scans a documents and that it scanned all pages in order. The largest document that I scanned was 24 pages. I don`t like that it doesn`t have a tray to catch the pages once they pass through the machine and also that the pages do not scan straight. The size of the scanner is great as it does not take up much room.

Scanner instructions weren`t too clear; I had to have help deciphering it. Some parts needed to be highlighted . Scanner itself (once set,up) worked ok ; I utilized my Cell phone to operate,it . The Scanner detected my cell phone from the software I downloaded from the play store. Scanner worked pretty good, I was able to scan in documents at a pretty fast rate. Scanner itself isn`t lightweight though.

I received the Brother Scanner completely assembled aside from plugging it in. I am a Realtor and a scanner is very helpful in my line of work. I connected pretty easily to the internet and am able to use the scanner wirelessly. I downloaded the Brother iPrint&Scan which was a somewhat long process, but I was able to multitask while waiting. I have scanned documents, receipts and cards with ease. It does not matter which direction you feed the papers, you can turn them the correct way once they have scanned. It can scan both sides of the document at the same time so you only have to feed it in once. The only part that could be improved for me is the paper feed guides. They lie back down too easily and I keep having to put them back up when adjusting paper size. Not a deal breaker, just something that I think Brother could easily fix. I love the ease of use and the compactness of the machine!

I was anticipating some problems because of prior Brother MFC and printer installations but not this time. I use it constantly and have it on my desk next to my HL2240 printer. Works good for work flow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish it worked like the ads-1500w. But it doesnt I purchased the ads-1700w to replace the ads-1500w. It does not have some key features passed on. First, you can't send to the cloud from the device. It has to be tethered to a PC. I can't be a near a PC always to get connectivity to upload to Dropbox. Instead, I have to go through the PC program and the program did not recognize the scanner wirelessly. Second. It will not connect to my NAS shared drive. I called brother and level 5 couldn't help. They are trying though. But my MFC-l8900CDW, my ads-1500w and my ADS-2800W all do. So. I returned the ads-1700w. I could not wait any longer for level 5 to get this going for me. Wish that it did. The lack of direct to cloud and the NAS issue killed it for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Minimal document management control The scanner works well and is fast enough for my needs, getting rid of paper in my home. However it is let down by the desktop interface that is saddly lacking some features that would make it so much easier to use and seem easy for Brother to implement. The interface allows you to create workflows that enable you to save documents in a variety of formats, with unique filenames and in a variety of locations. Thus, for instance, I can set workflows to save prescriptions for my wife and myself to the same folder location with filenames that indicate the owner. This is great, but the workflows are only saved in the order they are created, they cannot be sorted by name for example. Once you have developed a collection of workflows this becomes a necessity. Even nicer would be the ability to also group workflows in groups such as Medical, Utilities, Car etc.

The Brother ADS 1700 Scanner is a great compact scanner for home use. I found it easy to setup and I am not super savvy with electronics. But the instructions were thorough enough for me to understand. The scanner itself functioned fast. The paper fed through and easy to attach documents to emails. I was quite impressed with the quality of the scan. The touchscreen was user friendly. But it was a bit small and could be easy to fat finger. All in all great scanner for my home office.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast scans, great software I think this scanner is great. It is very fast, does two sided scans in a single pass, and is incredibly fast. The ADF is a bit flimsy, but I guess that's because the overall footprint of the scanner is very small to make it very portable. There is also no outfeed tray, so you need to have room in front of the scanner for the outfeed. I'm also very happy with the Brother scanning software, iPrint and Scan. It also comes bundled with PaperPort software, but that produces scans with a watermark unless you upgrade (purchase from Nuance. I was going to do that, but decided it was totally unnecessary since the Brother software works so well. One feature that is great - you can scan additional documents ( as in when you have too many pages for the ADF ) and add them to your PDF with the simple click of "Add Pages) button. All in all, this is a great addition to my home office. Did I say that it was FAST! And quality is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job Our office uses the ADS-1000w but with it being discontinued, we replaced it with the ADS-1700W. The ADS-1700W is not as user friendly as it's predecessor. You cannot just scan and print, you have to open as a .pdf or .jpg to be able to print. This is one extra inconvenient step. Otherwise it is a good replacement for the ADS-1000w.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and Easy to use, Does not easily jam It's wifi, so I can put it anywhere. Its fast. I have not had any jambs. It is two sided. The unit feels solid, the little fold out paper guides of the document feeder seem flimsy. Thats my only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Long receipts like I get from ShopRite are too long to scan. I use a Mac, and the software is in the app store. I configured two workflows, one for one sided scans and one for two sided scans. When I turn it on, I tap workflows, my imac, then my one or two sided workflow. I have it configured to scan one or two sided as a pdf into a specific folder, which I then have automated to import into Paperless. So far so good. It was $270, but I got an Amazon refurb for $200. So good value for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had a slight learning curve, but it works quick! Tried using on my laptop which is running Windows 11. Didn't work. Ended up installing it on my desk top computer running Windows 10. Took awhile to get it configured and setup, but it finally worked. It is much quicker than my multifunction printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great then didn't work at all. This was an absolutely fantastic scanner. I used it properly and regularly in my office. Then one day, after about a year and a half, it shut down and wouldn't turn on at all anymore. I reached out to Brother for help and they told me to buy a new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product generally performs well The scanner generally does a good job but sometimes despite 'fluffing" the pages it gets jammed up. It is also best to limit the number of pages to around 15 at a time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wasted Money I bought this scanner for a certain purpose because it was supposed to be Twain driver compliant and work with Neat Software. But to my dismay Brother isn’t going to update the Twain driver for the new Mac O/S. So I wasted my money because without using it for business it’s worthless to me. I can’t believe a big corporation like Brother renders a machine useless because they decide they don’t want to update the Twain driver for Mac anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not so great The ADS-1700W is not a friendly scanner when using it with a Acer Chromebook. As a Technical Coordinator for AARP, we have to use Chromebooks to access our scanners. The ADS-1700W looked like the best of the 2 scanners we could use. But IPrint&Scan for chrome has no where the features available on a Window machine. I found that the scanner would easily connect with some chromebooks and not connect with others at all. Now, part of this problem may be the poor interface of chromebooks with the world of computing. I have more power in my Samsung Galaxy Tab A, but the Acer Chromebook is the only machine that AARP will let us use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an awesome little machine My very expensive older scanner won't talk to Windows 10. I have in a pinch and ordered this from B&H Photo. It arrived very fast and is constantly blowing me away. It took a little practice to feed multiple sheets and I do need an area free on the desk when they all come flying out of the scanner. I have since used the phone app to scan documents, drivers license, vaccine card and it never ceases to amaze me. Well worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well! It works well doing duplex document scans and hard cards. Install/setup directions should definitely be redone. Mine would not setup or recognize by using a USB cable, thankfully I was able to do the setup on the LCD panel located on the scanner and things went smoothly from that point on. Setup was done for a wireless environment using Win 10.

I recently purchased a new laptop and tried to pair it with the ADS 1700 and I'm still not connected. I will reach out to support by phone for assistance.

It`s small in comparison to other brands and takes up the amount of space a tablet would. The assembly was fairly easy. I did have some difficulty because the words were small. After I was able to make out what was written,it was smooth sailing from there. My favorite feature is being able to use my phone. With technology growing, we all have our phones with us. Overall, I like the product.

All my documents in once place. Plus given the size I thought this is going to be great. I love that it`s small and powerful. Sits perfectly on my desk without taking a whole lot of space. You can actually take it with you for a meeting or any place really; that`s how small it is. And lightweight too. It`s a fast scanner and it scans each side as well. Documents came over pretty fast and well. No paper jams and it really does its job at at multiple pages per minute. Quality and speed were great. Touch screen is very effective and it takes just a slight easy touch to get it going. Easy set up. The screen was very bright and inviting. Here`s the cons I have: no rechargeable battery which means you literally have to have a power outlet at your disposal all times. The other item was difficulty working with older MAC systems. The drivers are limited. The instruction manual is very strange. Couldn`t find the STOP KEY as indicated and had to research online to figure that out. Nowhere in the manual does that show up. Overall it had great speed, software and I love the small size. So I recommend this scanner for all your scanning needs which includes phone, PC and USB. What a great way to keep all of your items in one place from a variety of options. Great job, Brother.

I had a heck of a time trying to set up this scanner. I tried to set up the wireless with no success. It suggested wireless could be accomplished with a USB or not. I tried the not and the instructions said to insert the CD, which was not included in the shipment. I tried three different USB cords and just couldn`t get it to work. I am open that part of it could have been lack of user knowledge, but I`ve set up computers and printers before and haven`t had this problem. Anyway, the actual scanner works really well. It is very fast and super easy to use. Basically, you turn it on, put your paper in, and scan. No thought process necessary! I didn`t have any issue with the quality of the scan.

Can't add or delete pages to file. They don't support Chromebook so no idea why our foundation bought this brand for us to use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ok Scanner This scanner has a nice compact form factor and is easy to take on the go. I've scanned over 1,000 pages, and it's still going strong. My only complaint is the scans come out a bit tilted if you're feeding more than 5+ pages at a time.

I have a tiny office so office equipment sizing is very important to me. This scanner is the perfect size for my desk without taking up too much space. It is very easy to use and scans very fast. I absolutely love the fact that it is portable since I tend to do business on the go often. Images uploaded great. WIll definitely use this item often.

It scans and saves every page separately instead of saving a multi-page scan as one document. There does not appear to be a feature to change this. Also, although it has a 20-page capacity, it jammed for me every time I put more than 5 pages in it. I bought a cheaper product that is faster, contains a greater page capacity, ignores blank pages on double sides, and that scans as one document.

My husband helped me install it, and he said there were a lot of instructions to follow and drivers to upload, etc. so it didn`t seem the most intuitive item. However, the wireless connectivity works wonderfully, and it scanned my first document so fast I was impressed. The quality of the image was also sharp, and then it gave us options to print it, save it, etc, so we didn`t have to go searching for the document in our computer in order to see it. All in all quite the little scanner! We are happy with it.

I received this product in exchange for my unbiased opinion. I Recently moved into a new house , And of course have so many documents that needs to Be stored away properly, so I was very thrilled about this scanner I love this scanner. It Was very easy to install I`ll have to do is plug it into the wall and of course a few steps into setting it up which was very easy. I mostly used it to scan a few card, And emailed a few documents to myself. I`m definitely interested in continuing to use this product which I find is very useful

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanning out of the box. The support for feeding legal size paper is short and could be an issue. Overall is a great portable scanner. When scanning several legal size pages can jam, if the page droopes over the document support arms it can drag sideways left or right and jam. I did not see a way to tellascope the supports, but I do not read all the directions unless I have a issue I can not live with. So far I only used the Quick setup guide and the scanner. I have used commerical scanners, desk top scanners, copiers, all in one printers, with and without ADF (Auto Document Feeders) The Duplex scanning and the speed of scanning with the accracy is great. I reccommed it, I now only use my Printer/Scanner for items your not supposed to scan with this scanner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanner review Overall, this scanner is a great addition to my office. Scans easily, creates single or double sided pdf files quickly, like the compact style. Only challenge is if you have over 10 pages or so to scan, the upright paper holder will not adequately keep pages straight during scanning process and finished scanned pages can be crooked.
